Hi Carl,

I think the subliminal message would have to be delivered in binary

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Kind regards, Bill.

Hi, Bill, Thanks for the tuppenny worth of advice. May try it if I decide to reset the speaker stands, but at present it's all sounding good and want to spend as much spare time as I've got actually listening to music! Hi, Carl, as I said, I didn't use the Isotek disc for a couple of days and then tried it again to see if there was an audible difference. And there was! So, I do use the warm-up track each time I fire up the full system now; it's only 5 minutes long, anyway. I think it may depend on how sensitive one's system is. We, in fact, notice that as the listening session continues, the sound does also improve, ever so slightly, but enough to be noticeable. Russ Andrews believes that the system should be left running continuously, even when not being used and through the night! I compromise and just leave the DAC on all the time, with the CD player and amp on standby when not in use. Also, I do use some old (back passenger) car carpets underneath my speaker stands. But, I suspect when I look underneath it will be full of spike holes!

Thank's dick hope your floor is ok under carpet - nice to hear that you also can tell the differance that this diisc makes to the quality of music. have you tried the magnetic mat yet ?.   Cheers ....Carl.

Hi Carl,

Pleased to hear that you are gaining some benefit from the mod.

As a practicing musician your ears will detect the benefit more readily than most

Best regards, Bill.

Hi bill,

Just listening to Freddy Murcury Hot space your advice has lifted sound up a notch, sound now more involving, love it. - next project will be surround amp RCA inputs.

Got to admitt i have worked in some noisy places and think my right ear has worn more than left? but took hearing test and it proved we wrong - still ithink right ear sounds more muffled than left - But this could all be in my head "LOL"

Show/hide user stats

Hi Carl,

A number of years ago I had my left ear flushed out.  Afterwards, talk about super-hearing! I swear I could hear a pin drop at 100 metres.  The high frequencies in particular became ultra-bright before it gradually settled down.  If it's of any help, I always wear ear protectors when using any domestic machine tools - even when vacuum cleaning - which can be ear shattering in a confined space.  Hearing is far too precious to waste!  Strangely enough, not long ago I read a  newspaper item about Orchestra members who were suffering hearing loss because their fellow musicians were too loud!  I'm sure the EEC legislation is already being drafted as we speak

Also, funny you should mention surround sound...

As you know CD doesn't get a huge amount of air-time in my house, but whenever I listen to CD I often cheat....

When in simple 2 channel mode it sounds like a poor relation to analogue, perhaps because low level detail and microdynamics are either missing or distorted, but to combat this I use the DSP capability of a Yamaha Surround 3-Ch processor with a minimal delay setting (1mS) in "Disco" mode (don't laugh ).

It has the effect of "fleshing out" the performers and giving them a bit of stage presence while enhancing stage depth - gets rid of the "one-dimensionality".  It's actually reminiscent of what some of the expensive CD players do. (So they probably cheat too   ) The effect is completely artificial (but hey - who said Stereo isn't) and it does cause an almost imperceptible loss of resolution compared to default, but it's a worthwhile trade-off most of the time.

The Beatles's "1's" album is particularly entertaining - especially the way voices and instruments are distributed.  "Hey Jude" and "Yellow Submarine" are firm favourites!

For the most part, any apparent soundstaging in any stereo recording is a contrivance of the studio engineer, unless it happens to be a genuine live recording , so I think I can afford to be liberal with the special effects

Now all I need is a graphic equaliser...(just kidding !!!!)

Kind regards, Bill.

Hi bill,

Yamaha surround - had good deal with mine from richer sounds cardiff, went in to look, came out with amp - full Eltax 5.1 speaker/sub, plus all brand named cables Qed, all for £400, which was the advertised price of the amp - nice chap he made my day.

Have routed front chanels through my nad amp for front sound and used spare speaker for rear centre - making it six.one surround, cracking with DTS -ex.

Talking about surround sound have you seen/heard DVD - War of the worlds Concert by Jeff Wayne dts sound track Justin hayward and Chriss Thomson are the only original singers, but newbys Tara Blaise, and Alixis James, still make this a great show.

Hi Carl,

Sounds like a great system you've created based on your 2-channel hifi.  These processors are getting harder and harder to find now, and the full-blooded 5.1, 6.1 amps don't always facilitate as pre-processors for an external amp.

The only disadvantage I can think of with 6-7 speakers is that you can't leave the room (Lol!)

Yes, I've wanted the WOTW for a while now, having the original vinyl double album.  I'd seen multiple variations on this ranging from a huge box set to the more basic CD sets-with-extra-material.

You have persuaded me Carl,   I think I'll shell out on it after all.

Cheers buddy,

Bill.

Hi Carl,

Actually the single disc was £6-99, while the double was £7-99 including all the juicy extras, so it was a real "no-brainer" decision

Cheers, Bill.

Hi bill,

How is the music session going - found any gems in them.

Was not on yesterday -took break to give eyes rest and house more attention - this site can be addictive.  Cheers ...Carl.

Hi Carl,

Absolutely....it can exert an almost "Mesmeric" pull -- especially the Isotek thread... I-s-o-t-e-k....

Darn that pile of discs just got even bigger !

Ah, the session : life caught up with me and a number of local emergencies denied the time and space to sit down and listen to them. Looks like I'll have to hang on to 'em for a bit longer until a window of opportunity opens up!

The weekend wasn't a total disaster though...I managed to buy a CD copy of "Live at the Rainbow" by Focus.  The vinyl copy I had years ago must have been lent out and failed to return It will be a pleasure to rediscover this album !

Kind regards,

Bill.

Hi Bill,

Has the focus disc got the track Tommy on it ? this track since using I- S- O- T- E- K disc and the shorted plugs has blown me away it is now better than when i first heard it and that was in the seventy's - all tracks jump right out at you-brill.

On music thread i mentioned-Hughie Green - there is a prog: on BBC four about his life on about eleven o'clock to night.   Cheers ...Carl

Hi, Bill, Carl, Just a quick note. Yesterday, also used my Densen demag disc, as well as the warm-up track on the Isotek disc and felt that there was a perceptible improvement in the sound. However, had also given the laser lens a clean. So, need to try the Densen disc without the laser lens cleaning. But, generally, for everyday listening, I find it enough to just use the Isotek warm-up track.

Am also using as a matter of course the Marigo Signature CD Mat. It's expensive, but again it gives a significant improvement. I do have also a Sicomin mat. This worked beautifully with the Marantz CD60 player, but with my Theta transport the Sicomin didn't do much and actually may have muddied the sound a little. Again, you just have to try these things and see if they work.

Anyway, my present set-up is sounding so good, that I don't feel the need to experiment much more and just want to settle back and enjoy my CD collection.

What is remarkable is how many CDs of even old mono and quite historical recordings sound so very good, giving sometimes a more natural effect than even some high tech modern recordings!

Cheers
