pluto yes i agree... elecrohead did point out the reason the magnet was used for and yes i was wondering if this would magnetize the cd's or optic transport over a long time. ??? -- still his player is Impressive.
Carl, if it sounds as good as it looks given the specs then i am in awe and envious, that sentence alone sums you up IMO, like so many you appear in awe of specs and appearance, actual sound seems pretty secondary. Now lets look at some facts, in order to DEMAGNETISE something one has to have an alternating magnetic field, eventually dyeing away to nothing, in doing so it removes any residual magnetism. So the magnetic 'puck' good as it may be, could only at best 'MAGNETISE' a cd and could never demagnetise it. Also if 'magnetically treating' a CD improves the sound then what happens to a computer CD, does that transform from having no errors to err having no errors, excuse me but a CD is a CD weather it is used for computer programs or for audio, it is the same technology. If Bill Gates were to suggest that the Vista operating system works best if one were to 'demagnatise' or 'deep freeze' his CD then it may have some credence, but even he does not. If a series of 'ones and noughts' are read from a CD or anything else then that is the information you have, if that is not read correctly then we have ERRORS, if we have errors in computer programs they are blatantly obvious, but the computer fraternity have never complained. IMO vague audio reports like 'the highs became sweeter' or 'improved slam' or 'the imaging sharpend' are all 'in the mind' and could be replicated with a suitable drug input, probably for a lot less £££.
Some time ago I suggested on this forum that we market a 'Hi Fi pill' it is in reality a completely harmless placebo pill, but the wording would suggest the improvements that could be heard, I now think that such a drug would not only be marketable but would also be a financial winner, it would all be down to the 'wording' the 'suggestions', and the 'promiss'. Marketing is powerful stuff, it can make us believe almost anything, what we tend to ignore is that most is on a subliminal level, therefore we would not recognise it as marketing.
Every country in the world appears to have it's good points, Scots - making money, English - ideas, Italians - design, French - food, Chinese - cheap products, Japanese - technology, Germans - efficiency, Indians - shopkeepers, but Americans - marketing.
Sorry but i thought this site was for folk to discuss hifi. I for one don't like your attitude as i have observed in other posts on this site - bullying tactics don't fare well with me i think for myself and not what you demand.- Mr Fisher
I'm sorry Carl, but facts are facts. You may not like the facts that John Fisher presents, but they are no less factual because you don't like the way that John presents them. You have now started attacking John personally rather than refuting the facts he presents; this is referred to as an ad hominem (literally – "to the man") attack and is all too common on hi-fi discussion boards when holders of left field views are called to account by those who understand the science behind audio reproduction.
...i read an artical on demaging compact discs with fridge magnets. Tried this and it improved sound. thought about this revelation and thought of optical transport did this and was amazed at the result.
If you are so confident of your CD demagnetization, would you accept a £100 wager (or any amount of your choosing) that you really can tell the difference between a demagnetized CD and an untreated one in a controlled trial?
Carl, if it sounds as good as it looks given the specs then i am in awe and envious, that sentence alone sums you up IMO, like so many you appear in awe of specs and appearance, actual sound seems pretty secondary.
Sorry but this statement alone was reason for my reply - personal attack came from this statement.
I understand your frustration with john, but i don't think he means to be offensive it's just his way of expressing himself , and he does talk good sense sometimes if you read between the lines, ( no offence john ! ) .
I am glad you like my CD player ,it does look impressive but more importantly it sounds astonishing ,better than the looks or the spec suggest, but i think this more likely the result of the discreet class A analogue output stage rather than it's digital topology. It was designed by musicians and music lovers who just happen to be top class electrical engineers and scientists who seem to use their ears and brains to design a product, which unfortunately is quite rare now days.
OK electro, your quite right I don't mean to be offensive, but by T3 words fall from the brain to the keyboard, all filtering off.
Carl, appreciate what you say, but this started off about demagging CDs. You may be interested in 'Podium' speakers, designed by a concert pianist, look like electrostatics but aren't. Saw and heard them at last years show, stunning.
Hamilton:"Thought you might all like to know - Fred (AKA Keith Macalpine, Oldphart etc) has been banned yet again from the WHF forums for abuse..........no change there then; reasoned argument ain't one of his strong points "
Get your facts right. There was no abuse. I was banned for exposing pseudoscience in the blurb of some of their advertisers.
Mr fisher i apologize for my response perhaps i did go over the top - not like me to be that responsive old age is catching up? sorry to all for my out burst. -- carl.

I have got my facts right, unlike your blinkered self, Fred, Keith, Nigel, whatever:
"Keith McAlpine aka Nigel Proctor aka Sid Rumpo aka Fred Scuttle aka Oldphrt has repeatedly broken house rules by ban-dodging, multiple registrations, and in the past has been banned for making defamatory statements, insulting the moderators - you name it.
In his latest incarnation I have allowed to continue on here on the basis of 'give him enough rope'. When he just directly insults people, and contributes nothing to discussions, the patience needed to keep tabs on him wears too thin - I'd rather be spending my time helping other users.!" - Mod from WHF Forum
Looks Like Dave Oliiver above would also concur......
I think Fred should start his own business making top class hifi equipment and cables out of the cheapest possible components and metals , sell them at very reasonable prices and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is right and everybody else is wrong.
He should then publish scientific papers to inform the rest of the world how he did it , but at no time must he ever use any marketing strategy to promote his products , he should only tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth at all times, and of course he must above all make a healthy profit to re- invest in R & D and to expand his empire.
If he achieves this i for one will hang on his every word, until then i will ignore him.
If you want to be taken seriously Fred , look at Pluto as an example.

Dave edited my post because I mentioned the moderator by name, that's all. The so called "defamatory" comments were describing one of those joke cryogenic companies that charge the earth for freezing your gear as crooks and charlatans and quoting a piece of pseudoscience from a well known cable company and describing it as dishonest. I never insulted any of the moderators but, if you look back, you will see that I was repeatedly insulted.
The multiple registrations and ban dodging amount to the same thing, but as I should never have.been banned for telling the truth in the first place.....

I always tell the truth and don't take you seriously either.

Bit defensive there Fred/Keith/Nigel......
I am sure people will make their own minds up whether to believe a self confessed ban dodger, or an independant moderator

I couldn't give a toss what technically challenged people like you or WHF moderators think, I've remained true to myself and told the truth. If only the cable companies would too the cable gods would be like the Greek gods by now but sadly where there's a mug there's a market and, of course, a fool and his money......
Blimey Fred, hang on in there, the others may catch up in time. Right, magnetism falls into the same realm as electrical static. Any surface which is spun, rubbed, worked or had electrical currents near or run through it also heat from electrical appliances will cause electrical static, and as you know, if you rub an inflated rubber balloon against a woollen garment you can then adhere it to any surface, whether it be ceiling, wall or even your head. So perhaps it is not demagnetising CD's but actually getting rid of the electrical static caused by friction. In perhaps doing so you have got rid of a certain amount of natural magnetism on the CD, but having played your CD that static will return so it is a no win situation. I'm afraid it's something we all have to live with.
