Interested to know the thoughts of any lucky PS3 owners on what the machine is like at playing Blu-ray discs? (If it's anything like the PS2 was at DVDs then I'd be put off!)
I've been sceptical about all this Blu-ray/HD DVD malarky but having seen a high definition film on BBC HD recently - which looked stunning - it's made me think again...

By all accounts the PS3 plays Blu-ray discs pretty well. Yet to get my hands on one, but will keep you posted when I do!

WOuld love get a ps3 but theyre just sooo damn expensive. I know i know, it's got a blu-ray player in it but still, it's far too much if you just want to play games.

got a ps3 but i find that it aint that good, to my eyes the picture looks as if the frame rate is slow and therefore jerky. my missus reckons she cant see it but she knows nothing. ive so far seen casino royal jerk loads and flightplan (such a bad film i tried counting the frames in a second until i fell asleep)but was not as bad as bond and night at the mueseum didnt seem that bad. anyway the ps3 is an awesome bit of kit so i dont feel too cheated.

I have played DVDs through my PS3 with upscaling to 1080i and it is better picture than from my Panasonic DVD 868 AVi player, I am using the HDMI output to my Panasonic Plasma and as I said, the DVD picture is better from the PS3. Have not played any Blue Ray Movies from PS3 though, no disc available where I live

I can only agree with you that the ps3 is a very good player, i have a couple of blu ray discs and i'm very happy with the picture going through my panny although its only 1080i. but saying that i have not seen any standalone blu ray players working yet but for the moment i'm chuffed. regarding my other post about a jerky picture it seems to have been sorted with firmware updates.

PS3 is an excellent Blu-Ray player and is currently the only one worth getting. Other dedicated machines can provide a slightly better picture (e.g. Sony BDP-S1E) but are more expensive and can't be upgraded to play the extras on the Profile 2.0 discs when these come out whereas the PS3 can.
I have a PS3 and the visuals on the likes of Blood Diamond, Casino Royale, Mission Impossible 3 and Pan's Labyrinth are incredible. The upscaling of normal DVDs through the HDMI connection is extremely good as well, so much so that I sold my old expensive Denon stand alone DVD player.
And if that's not enough for you, What Hi-Fi named it their "Best DVD & HD player £300-£500" in their 2007 awards.

I just one of these babies and they are indeed great as a player and games console.
I got mine from here...

250 quid thank you very much indeed! Mine came with Ghost recon 2 and is WHITE! Some folk might be put off by not being able to play region 2 blu ray but I always saw region 1 as being the one to go for anyway since most movies come out earlier and are uncut!
Just got myself a wireworld ultraviolet HDMI lead and oh my blinkin flip do the games and trailers look good! I think that lead is reviewed somewhere on this site too and I have a feeling that's why I bought it. If anyone's a bit hesitant about shelling out 90 squid for an hdmi lead, don't be -it's sooooo worth it.
Happy playing and watching folks -oh the joy of high def!

Any thoughts on the minimum size TV for use with a PS3? My son has been promised a PS3 if he does well enough at GCSEs, but says he needs at least a 32" TV to play it on (cheeky little s*d )

I am interested in Blu ray but dont play games, is the ps3 easy to use?
|
 |
I was going to buy one but the sales person told me they were always breaking down due to poor laser heads. Dont know if they were just trying to sell me an extended warrenty, so I just said in that case no thanks and walked out.

Neil - get the little sod what YOU want to get him - a 32 would be great but 28 would be fine I'm sure.
J - PS3 very easy to use but keep you eyes peeled as stand alone blu ray players are starting to become quite a bit cheaper.
Anthony - I have no idea about that - sorry I can't help. Just check out a bunch of sites or just google it and you're bound to get an answer.

Thanks Mathias - good advice

Does it come with DVD cotroller or do you have to buy it as an extra with reciever that fits in a memory slot like the PS2?
|
 |
you can buy that as an extra (it's blu tooth - as is the PS3)

So far I only have the final cut of Blade Runner, no problems with that and I have the DVD version as well and its noticebly better even on standard def.

I do have a ps3 and have played Blue-ray disks on it and I really do believe its the best thing to come out EVER!!! After all its won the HD/Blue-ray war.

I held out for 2 years until the HD DVD / Blu-ray death match ended recently, and am pretty impressed so far. My 1st Blu-ray HD movie was 2001: A Space Odyssey - seeiting it (after quite a number of years) in HD on a Full HD 37" TV is something to behold You do need to invest in a remote control on top of the kit, but it's worth it. I still need to investigate how to optimise the overal A/V setup, so am going to post a separate query shortly ...

Neil - well, the size of the screen isn't so important but to take full advantage of the PS3, it really needs to be an HD Ready set at the minimum, ideally connected via HDMI or component if that isn't possible. Anthony - that sounds dubious to me on the laser issue with Sonys. I'm a member of a number of AV forums and have never heard of this so is definitely not a widespread issue.

Thanks Antony I've seen one of his friend's systems, and I do see what he means about the size being important to get the best from the system - I'll make sure it's HD Ready and HDMI connected. Neil
