Head to head: PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360
Yes, you can play games on 'em, but what about the DVD, CD, Blu-ray and SACD players...?

@ Tim

Jeezzz get a life man, or get laid or something... you,r not only ignorant but also boring.
The autor also has the ps3 specifications wrong, so what, he just made copy.past of some site. The point is that PS3 is just a fantastic piece of hardware while x360 is pure junkware. Wen I'm playing my PS3 I don't have the concern that it can die at any moment, and that my friend means alot.

Who got a free PS3 from Sony? I wonder, this article reeks of fanboyism....

And I have both!

"we" are very sorry that not even all sites have been americanized by M$ and that x3fixme fanboys have to read some truths. US is the only place where x360 sells because americans are the dumbest people of all times.

Horrible review. Probably the worst review I have ever read in ages.

Excellent Review.  Probably the Best Review I have ever read in ages!

I was ps2 through and through.  I bought the 360 and decided to wait for more games for ps3.  That's what most of my friends have done too.  When ever ps3 decide to get there act together I'll trade it in.

I find it ironic that the Xbox is in the Blue corner with the PS3 in the red.

When infact the PS3 has "Blu[e]-Ray" and the XBox has been known for its dreaded "Red ring of death."

It may have nothing to do with the article, but I think a clever writer that knows what they are talking about should have picked up on it...

People, the specs for the Xbox 360 were printed incorrectly, which was an AVReview production issue, not an error of the author - sorry about that, but the correct ones should be up there now.

Glad to see you're all so passionate about your games machines, but this review was never intended to be the last word on the subject and won't be the last time that we cover aspects of platforms, including the Xbox 360's HD DVD capabilities.

By the way, I've had to remove a few posts from this thread already - discuss the article, discuss the concepts, but please don't use it just to trade insults.

Treating these things as media players rather than games machines is old ground and dates back to the Playstation 1 - This article is characteristic of the debate. The Absolute sound rates the PS3 as an audio player & there's a really good article there this month talking about the absolute differences between it and a number of other players from different price bands.

I actually bought a Playstation 1 to try it (£9 on ebay). The overall sound was good although the mech was noisy and instead of a remote control you had a wired games controller which was odd. Very smooth sound.  Very low WAF and I didn't think it was better than the Cambridge 840C.

If the PS3 drops to £250 I might give it a try but I'd have no interest in the games.

You're right, the games on PS3 don't generate interest because they are crap.  I should know, I own a PS3.  Thankfully I bought it for USD$485 in Hong Kong and not £425 in the UK which is the rough equivalent of USD$850.  Absolutely ridiculous for this piece of crap.  As a Blu-ray player, USD$485 was an acceptable price to pay as a early adopter, but is certainly not worth it a year later, when BD players have dropped in price considerably, and when better models have come out for less than PS3 with a lot more features.

I have to say the reviewer made another error with regards to the PS3's SACD capabilities.  To its credit, the PS3 does support full 5.1 channel SACD via HDMI.  Yes, you need a HDMI-capable receiver, but if you do, the sound quality is fantastic.

In a sense, I can see the point of the review focusing on the PS3's AV capabilities because that is all it's good for, though again, if that's the only reason why you're considering it, you would do a lot better getting one of the newer, second/third generation BD player models.

As a games machine, the PS3 absolutely fails.  It's no surprise the 360 outsold it by DOUBLE last month in the US, and crushed it in the UK as well.  This may well have to do with the US$50 price cut of the 360 last month, but when Sony discounted the PS3 price by USD$100 two months ago, PS3 still couldn't beat 360.   In fact, the PS3 has never outsold the 360 in the US in any month, despite coming a year later in the market.

Don't expect that to change when 360 has Halo, Mass Effect, and Project Gotham Racing 4 coming out all by the end of the year, not to mention Game of the Year, Bioshock, which was just released.  The PS3?  It has Lair, which has garnered 50% reviews, as well as Warhawk, another so-called hyped-up "AAA" title that's been mediocre disappointment.  The best game to come out on PS3 until the end of the year is Heavenly Sword, supposedly PS3's "Halo killer" which has garnered 80% reviews and pales in comparison to the God of War series.  From the reviews, you fight all the same enemies for the entire game and there is 0% replay value, not to mention no online.  Another sad disappointment for PS3.

All things considered, the 360 is a superior console to the PS3 by far.  Way better games, more games, miles better online service, rumble, and half the cost of the PS3, the choice is easy.  The PS3 is even failing in its home country, Japan, where the Playstation brand has traditionally dominated.  Savvy Japanese gamers have so far rejected the PS3, despite it having all of those JRPGs that they love (and which the 360 truly lacks), and have voted overwhelmingly for the Nintendo Wii.  In fact, Nintendo, with it's two main products in the market (Wii and NDS) now has a bigger market cap than all of Sony combined, not just the games division.  Says a lot about how Sony is utterly failing.

Show/hide user stats

Even Sony thinks the PS3 sucks.  Earlier this year, Sony fired the "father of the Playstation", "Krazy Ken" Kutaragi.  This is the man that brought Sony back from the depths of its failures in the early 90's with the Playstation brand, which completely revitalized the company.  For Sony to can this guy means something is terribly wrong.

Keep in mind it's already too late for PS3 to bounce back.  With the horrible sales that PS3 has so far, a vast majority of 3rd party game developers and publishers are now canceling previous PS3 exclusives or simply making them "multi-platform" for the 360 as well.  The 360, on the other hand, is getting more and more exclusive games just for the console.  Capcom, Ubisoft and Epic have been almost one-sided in its support of the 360, and Peter Moore, the former VP of Microsoft's gaming division has just been hired as the President of EA Sports, a move supported 100% by MS.  No doubt he still holds a lot of that MS stock.

Capcom publishes the exclusive 360 million-sellers, Dead Rising and Lost Planet, and has made previous PS3 exclusives, Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 multi-platform for the 360.  Ubisoft made its Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six timed exclusives for the 360, made formerly PS3 exclusive Assassin's Creed multi-platform on the 360, and is releasing the next Splinter Cell as a 360 exclusive.  Even Haze, the once P33 exclusive has now just been announced will be only a timed exclusive for PS3, with the 360 version coming out a few months later after Christmas.  Epic released the 2006 Game of the Year, Gears of War, exclusively on the 360, and its sequel will be as well.  Supposedly 360 was getting Gears of War and PS3 was getting Unreal Tournament 3 exclusively, but now UT3 will be released on 360 as well, on the same day as the PS3.  Even Square Enix, the publisher of one of the few Playstation exclusive franchises, Final Fantasy, has just announced TWO exclusive JRPGs for the 360.

Show/hide user stats

Really, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.  Game publishers go where the money is, and the 360 is by far the most attractive platform to release games on.  Despite the Wii being the number one selling console, the 360 sold more games last month than the Wii and the PS3 COMBINED.  I personally like the Wii, which I own along with the 360 and the PS3, but I have 2 games for it, and that's all I need.  I suspect most people are the same, buying the Wii for Wii Sports and occasionally another game like Zelda.  But 360 owners are true gamers who buy multiple games every month.  That's why all the game developers are releasing their games on the 360, and why less and less are developing for the PS3.  It just doesn't make financial sense to do so, not when there is such a small installed user base.

If you're going to buy the 360, get the Elite version with HDMI and 120GB hard-drive.  Couple that with the HD-DVD add-on and you're still paying less than the soon-to-be-discontinued 60GB PS3, and you get a fantastic games player AND HD movie player.  Not to mention the Elite 360 comes with a HDMI cable AND headset INCLUDED, unlike the PS3, which is not HD capable out of the box.  Buy the PS3 in the UK, and you're paying the equivalent of USD$850 for the 60GB model when Sony sells the 80GB model in South Korea for half that price.  Yes, for some reason, Sony has traditionally gouged UK gamers and the PS3 is no exception.

If you've already bought your PS3 in the UK, then I feel sorry for you.  No doubt, you were fooled into thinking the PS3 was going to be like the PS2, a good games machine with the best games library.  Sadly this generation, the PS3 is the equivalent of the Atari Jaguar - Johnny Come Lately and Dead On Arrival.

First of all moron Gears of War is not an fps its a third person shooter. Second Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, Ninja gaiden 2, Lost Odysee, Too Human, Forza, Dead Rising, Ace Combat, Lost Planet and just to name a few are also not first person shooters. Third to the retard that started this post the 360 has three cores not one, and the ps3 does not have 7 true processors. The PC is the best place for shooters ill give you that one but not if i want to play on my 50 inch on my couch. I also guarntee that in a couple of years ps3s will start dropping like flies just like that pos ps2 but this time it will stop reading blue ray discs not blue backed dvds.

if u ask me wat is better?
360 might b cheap but its graphics is de same just like ps3 but more smooth.a gamer just want to play a game , however he hav a cheap console or expensive. he dont need extra functions like big harddisc to store pictures , audio , movies etc. he wants to play games. for that kind of person 360 is de best choise bcaz it contains tons of games. whlie ps3 hav few games n very expensive too.the best games avilable in ps3 also contain 360. but as we know 360 is cheap than ps3 , i think 360 hav also low quality n ps3 hav very high quality. but if u take care n use gently then 360 is good also. do u wat ps3 is for those people who r very rich , they easily afford it but not normal person.
so if u ask me xbox will b my choise n i hope urs too.

Unfortunately, the problem here is that Sony didn't set out to make a brilliant "games machine" with the PS3.  Sony was confident (or some say arrogant) enough to believe that after the success of the first two Playstations, that no matter what console they released as PS3, it would dominate the market.  Therefore, Sony set its sights on a far more lucrative target - owning the next "video format".

Ever since the failure of Betamax, Sony has set to revise this colossal mistake.  No doubt, owning the patent of an industry standard format would mean billions in licensing fees.  Take a look at the examples of VHS and DVD.  Sony, itself with Philips, had already had great success in the red-book CD format, which they invented and continue to generate ungodly sums from.  Take a look also at failed formats such as DAT, Mini-Disc, SACD, and UMD, all products of Sony and all miserable failures, as a further sign of how interested Sony is in proprietary formats.

Now consider the PS3.  With Sony's confidence that PS3 would sell like gangbusters (pre-release targets were 200 million consoles by the end of the PS3 life-cycle), they believed that by including a Blu-ray drive, even at humongous cost to the consumer, that they had such a tight grip on the market that consumers would be forced to buy the PS3, no matter the cost.  Thus, with incredible sales, the PS3 becomes a trojan-horse for Blu-ray, introducing the product as the heir to DVD, and effectively eliminating HD-DVD as the competition.  More importantly, Sony would then receives the billions in licensing fees from other electronic manufacturers, Hollywood studios, and any other 3rd party that wished to bring a Blu-ray product to market.

As we know now, this strategy has been a disaster.  Not taking Nintendo or Microsoft seriously, and making outlandish comments pre-launch such as "PS3 will sell 5 million units without games" (by the SCEE UK CEO), Sony greatly underestimated the intelligence of its fan base, and thus, we have the Wii being a not totally unexpected runaway smash, and the 360 building an incredible fanbase and reputation as THE console for the serious gamer.  What's worse is that Sony is finding 3rd party game developers abandoning them for greener pastures, that is, particularly, the Wii and the 360.

Even though it seemed initially that perhaps their Blu-ray gamble might work afterall, that despite the failure and dead-on-arrival status of the PS3, that it did breathe some life into Blu-ray, now comes news that two new Hollywood studios are abandoning BD and going HD-DVD exclusive, that is Paramount and Dreamworks, along already with Universal Studios and The Weinstein Company that were already HD-DVD exclusive.  Also, there are rumors that Wal-mart, which some have credited the sub-USD$100 players they made available as driving the DVD market in the US, has placed an order for 2 million cheap HD-DVD players from a Chinese manufacturer.  In either case, neither HD-DVD or Blu-ray has made a significant inroad to the mass market, with DVD reigning comfortably supreme and will likely to remain there for at least 5 more years.

Show/hide user stats

Thus, Sony has come to find all their arrogance to backfire on them.  Not only did they give up their dominant position in the video game market, with the Playstation brand once being the jewel to its crown, but that their gamble on Blu-ray is far from paying off.

Having been a previous Playstation owner in the past, and a current one with my PS3 serving primarily as a Blu-ray player, alongside my Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on for HD-DVDs, I have to say Sony made a huge mistake in not focusing on making PS3 an amazing games player that could have easily retained the market lead that PS1 and PS2 built, but by being greedy and trading on the loyalty of its gaming fans to win the HD video format battle, it basically committed market suicide as well as alienating and angering legions of its own loyal gaming fans.

The head to head at least made interesting reading but the quick scan of the reactions proves how sad some people actually are.

I shall still cherish my ps3 and xbox 360.
