Hi Wotslice,

I'm inclined to agree that the sound softening issues were a speaker cable effect. Stats seem to be particularly discriminating about cable choice not just because of very low speaker impedance, so I can understand your logic in trying different cables. The Naim cable is low C, low-av L, and fairly low resistance (plus the fact I improved matters by using shorter runs..) .but all this also depends on the amplifier's reaction to these different cables in conjunction with the Load (as John highlighted earlier in the Interconnect thread?)

I understand that too much serial inductance can bring stat resonances down towards the audio band.

Those spikes you mentioned a while back should help to tighten the bass a bit too  although it depends whether they can afford you the same height/tilt adjustment as you are getting here?

I have a similar problem in that the spikes are right at the edge of their full extension at the rear of the cabinet as the natural angle of the Stat is tilted whereas I'm trying to bring them forward nearer to true vertical. Seems a false economy for Logans using only an M6 thread which is liable to snap under stress  The older ones were capable of being "walked" or rocked on their spikes but I wouldn't do it with these !

All the best,

Bill.

Bill,

I've found the spikes, and they seem to be all the same height so it  doesn't look like they offer any extra tilt. I dont really want to put them on as this will severlry restrict any physical movement of the speakers (which I've been doing quite a lot of lately) although I should really just to have a listen.

I forgot to reply to your thread about hoovering the stats -  my heart ws in my mouth just reading your post  ! I've hoovered the covers of the Quads with a small hand held jobbie which whilst not completed in seconds, seems safe enough  - although gently does it

Re cables:  has there been any specific listening tests of speaker cables for stats that you are aware of ?

Hi Wotslice,

Yes....the cleaning does put me in a cold sweat ! On the second clean I contented myself with getting close but not actually touching the stators .

No reviews but here's an interesting White Paper...

Thanks for the link Bill.

Have you ever heard these cables?

Hi Wotslice,

Sadly not (and I doubt they retail locally.....)

it's important to know what the customer is getting and I observed they don't publish the actual cable spec on the website (strange omission) so I've e-mailed them for a more detailed spec...

Kind regards,

Bill.

Hi Bill,

As I want them unterminated, they've offered a decent deal, shipping is from USA.

Nothing ventured and all that.

Hello Bill,Wotslice, dont for christ sake use a hoover on your stats, get a mini-vac or hurricane blower we photographers use to remove dust, they are only about £10-15 and will last a lifetime.....Dave

Hi Dave I was using a handheld vac, and lightly "hoovering" the cloth covering, not the panels themselves, I think Bills' stators are more exposed.

What's a hurricane blower?

Best.

Hi Wotslice,

You don't hang around mate !

When you've got them running we look forward to your feedback

Kind regards,

Bill

Hi Dave,

"....dont use a hoover on your stats, get a mini-vac or hurricane blower we photographers use to remove dust, they are only about £10-15 and will last a lifetime...."

Good advice.  I know a few people who prefer to blow the dust off and it works equally well.

I spoke to Jim Power of Martin Logan about this a while ago and he describes the mylar as being incredibly resilient. The way he put it, "I could give you a 2ft square sheet and invite you to tear it or distort it and you would find it almost impossible..." It certainly survives the full force of a Dyson at close range without any problems...

Still not good for the nerves though....

All the best mate...Bill.

Hi Wotslice,

You'll be breathless with anticipation by the time they arrive mate  I sincerely hope the "interconnect" thread hasn't quenched the spirit of enthusiasm!

I've been playing catch-up on that one...it's hot stuff !

Ordered my new turntable by the way....no going back now !

Cheers buddy,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Re the cables, the delay is on my part not the suppliers and I'll be more than happy to share my listenening experiences with you.

My enthusiasm hasn't been dented by the I/C thread but just surprised at some of the arguments about the cable test some 2 months after it happened  and that John and Pluto did seem to be going off track a bit. The discussion is still going round and round, but I appreciate your support. At the end of the day my ears will tell what's right and what isn't.

Hello Bill,Wotslice. What T/T did you end up with then Bill?.Whats all this about cables,i just dont understand any of it,or is it just a thread for an argument,as John seems to like nothing better, and the times he writes at,he must be up all night [wonder if he,s a bat].Got the day off work, and with the time am going to look into a new amp, will be sticking to Krell though, its a known quantity, and i quite fancy the Evolution range especially the EVO410 mono-blocs,will keep you informed what happens.........Take Care........Dave

Hi Wotslice,

Sadly I got an "unobtainable" when I used their contact e-mail so no feedback on the cable elect characteristics....

Re Interconnects : I think it's called "moving the goalposts". By means of measurement this gives a further opportunity to refute any results in the previous test although to be fair to John he did this by invitation

Pluto now thinks it was just dirty connectors while John previously began to believe it was blind luck.  You see what happens when you leave people to their own devices....!

Kind regards, Bill

Hi Dave,

The turntable ordered is the "Raven One"...a big culture change from the LP12 (non-suspended chassis). I've decided to retain the Linn Ittok arm for the moment. Graham Tricker of GTAudio, the supplier, suggested refurbishing the arm which was something I never considered. There's a chap up here who specialises in this so I might give him a call, but will check the bearings first to see how serviceable they look. He also recommended foam-filling the arm tube to reduce resonance. Might be worth a shot as I've nothing to lose but the smile on my face

John is most definitely nocturnal....he writes his best posts at 1.30am !!!

All the best mate.....Bill.

Dave...forgot to mention....I've heard the Krell Evolutions and also the FBI....

They are Mighty amplifiers for sure (and very nice sounding too) and not likely to be broken in a hurry !(By any kind of load )

Take care.....Bill

Hi Bill,Wotslice,as i said in the thread "what music do you like" i didnt opt for the EVO,s but bought the test speakers instead[TDL RTL4]but dont have a system to plug them into, but am considering wiring them up in an AV set up using my 100Ms which i am now keeping, but am getting them serviced next week at home, all that worrying for nothing, these 100s are still the best[IMO]amps on the market even if they are nearly 20 years old.Now then how do i get surround sound with just two power amps???do i get a processor or what,i dont think i,ll need a sub-woofer,with bass down to 13hz,it would be overkill, any advice from the two of you would be heeded.Sorry but i,ve never heard of your turntable, but as long as you love it, thats all that counts, sounds expensive though......Take Care....Dave

Hi Dave,

I cant help you about surround sound as I've just got my stereo set up plus a Sharp Aquos 46 incher that uses its won speakers. I  did have a type of surround sound TV set up about 9 years ago but I got fed up with the rear speaker cable runs, as my room  isnt quite right to deply rear speakers.  I've not listened to today's surrond sound offerings, but I would have thought the amp and speakers would need to be matched? and the sound direction is front, back, left, right and centre? I'm probably showing my ignorance here but Bill will have a more sound (no pun intended) knowledge and experience.

Regards
