The topic of mains noise is a thorny one for many of our readers, evidently throwing up as many questions as answers. Although it's generally accepted that mains filters and power cords can provide a purer sound for your hi-fi...

OK Rik I will have to down grade the offer but if you can differentiate a cheap kettle cable from one of your favorites repeatedly and consistently then I will give you £100, simple as that, if you can't then you owe me nothing, but if you can actually prove there to be a difference then I will give you £100, what could be fairer.

Hi John,

We certaintly could tell a difference in mains lead - Im not going to try to prove it to you except to say that all 3 of us when we did the comparison came up with the same results. I just expressed my experience with main leads - take it or leave it. You may not be the fount of all knowledge when it comes to hifi as all of us are learning and growing all the time.  but at the same time I do respect you have had a lot of experience in hifi.

My engineer friend also said that a mains cable would make no difference until he tried it out and now he is convinced so much so he has bought a few power leads for his system.

Have a good day.

Steve.

Guys, let's leave that 'discussion' there.

John, I know you're fervent in your beliefs, but I'm getting heartily sick of how you seem to be able to turn every discussion about cables into a slagging match. Your other input is welcome, but don't talk about cables on the forum any more except to refer readers to your past, extremely fulsome, arguments. If you do, I'll delete the posts.

Thanks Dave,

Hope you all have a good day - its a lovely 25 today.

Hi Rik and Steve,

I have bought a RA purifier block, Classic and super power chords and the difference in two different rooms has been slight.

In some circumstances not using the block has sounded better.

The biggest upgrade has been a Chord power which I use for the pre (all valve Croft). The difference was obvious immediately with more clarity and transparency. It then got worse as it burned in with lack of bass but now sounds superb.

If I buy another chord it will be the Chords from my limited experience. I find the power chords make most difference to the amps especially the power but not so much with the CD or even turntable.

Enjoying the discussion from you two (and Bill).

Slawts

Hi Slawts,

Thanks - I found the power cords work best with my power amps and cd player.

Have a good day.

Theres not going to be any more dicussions between me and John on cables though. Ive disowned him

John and Fred are so stuck in their ways that if you PROVED to them the differences they would STILL shout out words like ~ 'magic' or 'placebo'

Personally.....id like to buy em both an ear syringe

My dad uses chords to his amp and cd player. PROPER cables them! (Cant remember the actual name of them though) Not saying theyre the best, simply stating that the build quality really cannot be disputed.

Ive found purifiers and the like only work on exquipment thats not drawing much power. CD players etc. Not so good for amps.

"The difference was obvious immediately with more clarity and transparency. It then got worse as it burned in with lack of bass but now sounds superb."

Again, someone else whos ACTUALLY tried them and found the exact same also.

Sir...I salute you

Hi Rik,

Many thanks for your kind remarks (about 2 pages ago - this is me catching up! )

This Thread has moved at a rapid pace !

Thanks also for posting the background on Mike Fremer/Randi episode. Although Journalists tend to be pretty low down on the ladder of Truth  (along with Politicians) after reading the Timeline I actually found myself siding with Mike Fremer over the whole deal. It's clear that Randi is a slippery customer as well as being a showman - and we've all met a few of those....

Cheers buddy....................................Bill.

Hi Steve,

Wow ...That was an impressive piece of research you performed back there mate...

When it comes to Audio I consider ears as valuable a research tool as anything else - possibly more so - since ultimately our sole purpose in buying a Hifi system is to listen to it rather than watch it on an oscilloscope.

Your (coincidental) results and my findings on the diiferences caused by using lesser cables or the intervention of a Mains Conditioner will have the Placebo people wondering how can "Placebo" take place on a "graduated" or hierarchical scale i.e if the recipient is imagining things shouldn't everything just sound plain excellent all the time irrespective of combination ?

Very thought provoking.....

Have a good day yourself and take care..... (jealous of the 25 degrees BTW )

Bill.

I think a few of the problems with Randi is clearly money. Money IS power as we all know and if your willing to go up against him your staking a LOT (especially if your a company).

Obviously theres 2 sids to every story but i personally believe hes one big fraud. Especially as ive only heard of the ONE bloke actually giving it a go and then (im not saying this is true ~ I really dont know)  Randi just dismisses him!!

Whos going to try going up against that??

Cheers Rik ! I like to throw in the odd bit of controversy every now and then

It's good to stimulate my grey matter every now and then (or should that be red matter...as it's red when it's alive and only grey when it's dead and sitting in a jar?  )

All the best................................Bill

Thanks Bill - it sounds like you have a good sense of humor.

Happy listening.

Dave; I canot believe you have told John to shut up, especially with his past experience in the motion picture industry, I for one would rather listen to Johns advice on HI FI or AV.I also noticed that Rick H used some rather nasty words towards John personally, this is quite unacceptable!!!.

Oh, and by the way Rik you really do need to grow up.

All the best Mick.

Just a thought, I recently purchased a De-Tox CD, with claims of demagnetizing abilities for speakers and ancillaries, after twenty minutes of white noise pops crackles zings and zongs there was not an Iota of difference to the sound quality,In fact I thought it was worse.I may sue?.

All the best Mick.
