I have a look in every so often Electro I just dont think the posts are interesting enough to get anyone attention. The forum needs interesting threads else no one will join. And by interesting I do NOT mean slanging matches

Hi Red, Carl , Nice to hear you are still looking in . Red , I agree other similar forums do not seem to be having any problems and they seem to handle the cable / power conditioner differences of opinion in a more relaxed manner letting people express themselves with minimal moderation and in the end people just agree to disagree on the subject and move on to more important matters . Another thing that I have noticed is that when someone posts a question and I answer it in the best way I can it seems I rarely get an acknowledgement or a reply so I loose heart sometimes , but it is always new posters that do this and it's kind of annoying , after all if they think I am talking rubbish they should say so . Carl , It never ceases to amaze me the lengths to which some large companies will go to destroy the lives of their workers when they are no longer required. I think in the not too distant future ordinary people will stand up and say enough is enough , we are getting quite close to that tipping point IMO . Anyway lets hope a few more of the old regulars will pop up and we can get the old banter going again . All the best Electro.

Hi all and Dave o, This is Electro posting under a new name because I am unable to log on at all now , I keep getting APPLICATION ERROR come up every time I try . CAN ANYBODY HELP ? Help please Electro.

Hi electro, carl, Red, I check the forum every so often too. For myself I think a couple of issues has limited my replies on the forums - sometimes discussion on topics like cables gets a little heated. The other thing is there seems to be less regular reviews on this site too. I think the last one was back in October, they use to do cd, amp, speakers etc comparisons. I would love to see a budget shootout of budget blueray players. Hope everyone is well. Cheers Steve.

Hi Stephen, and all , Nice to hear from you hope all is well , I have been watching the news about the terrible floods in Australia , I hope you have not been affected ! The forum has been out of action for a few days , it was impossible to log on but thanks to Chris at Magicalia it seems to be sorted out now . I have noticed too that there is a lack of new reviews and competitions it seems everybody has lost interest which is a shame because this was and is the most civilized HiFi forum / site . All the cable terrorists seem to have gone now so posting should be less frustrating in future. Have not heard anything from Dave Oliver recently so I hope the site will carry on in future . All the best Electro.

Hi all, Yes the floods have been bad. We currently haveing a large cyclone in Queensland ( about 500kmh wide) tonight they are saying it is a category 5 and there will be winds of up to 290kmhs. Im wondering that myself Electro about the site as its so quiet even from reviewers and Dave O. By the way I bought a bluray player Sony s370 I have only used it for a few hours heaps of clarity and picture is great. Will the sound improve with burn in - its a little forward lacking a little depth compared to my old pioneer dvd, the sony certaintly has more detail and clarity than the pioneer though. Cheers Steve.

Hi all , It seems Australia is getting a real beating weather wise at the moment , it makes me wonder which country is going to get it next as these strange weather pattens circle the globe . Stephen , You will probably find that you will get used to the new sound balance of your blu ray player after a while , it seems to me that there is always a period of adjustment with a new piece of equipment . All the best and keep safe in the bad weather, Electro.

Hi, Thanks for the concern, I live a long way from Queensland, but I have friends and relatives who had a close call by the recent floods at and near Brisbane. Im wondering whether if its global warming - some are saying that as the planet warms more extreme weather will result. Red I think you bought the sony s370 too did you find that it took some burn in time?. Maybe we sholuld send Dave O a message making sure that AV review is going okay. Have you heard from any of the other forum members? Cheers Steve.

I assume youve got your amp decoding and not the sony? (most amps will do a better job)
I honestly cant remember now, but my sound is perfect to my ears. Certainly not 'bright'. Bass on my system can be frightening at times, and treble isnt harsh at all. However, I do have a very good mains supply. Im under the belief that hifi at the budget end (not just the budget end, but affecting most of the budget end) tend to have poor power supplies. Meaning if you dont have a decent mains supply, the equipment will suffer as a result. As for the weather - I agree. It certainly seems to be getting worse and the last 10 years in england have had some of the worst weather on record in 9 of them. That said, there are cycles that last thousands of years. Another ice age 'will' come in the future. Perhaps this is just a part of the cycle.

Hi all , Just thought I would tell you about a very unusual HiFi show coming up on 6Th March at Scalford Hall Melton Mowbray. Instead of being a show organised by HiFi manufacturers or magazines it is organised by another HiFi forum and the equipment is in fact owned by ordinary HiFi enthusiasts who take their systems along and set them up in the rooms for everybody to look and listen to, so you get to see and hear a very wide range of equipment and talk to the owners as well. See http://thehifishow.com/index.html And some pictures from previous shows . http://www.thehifishow.com/gallery.html I think this is a great idea and I will probably be going , what do you think of it ? All the best Electro.

Hi electro, I had a look through the pictures, some nice older stuff there - Quads, leaks etc. I wish I could catch a flight over to the UK and enjoy listening to some of the equipment. Enjoy the experience. A friend of my has a pair of Quad speakers from the 50's they have lovely mids, lacks a little bass though - very musical speakers. Cheers Steve.

Some of these shows in the Midlands are actually easier/more pleasant for me to get to than venues like Heathrow (I'm in London). I don't think that I can do Scalford this year as I'm working but I hope it continues. I'm going to Bristol this year (I usually go every other year) but Scalford looks far more eclectic and interesting. Stephen, You can get a bit more bass out of ESL57 if you stack them. It's actually not an outrageous idea as they're pretty cheap compared to other comparable high end S/H speakers. They're surprisingly practical too as pretty much all of the spare parts are currently available. I also bought a S-370 just as a stopgap until the technology settles down a bit. Surprisingly good. Didn't notice much burn in. I am not convinced that a standalone CD player would sound any better with CDs at that price. With SACDs I preferred it to the Denon 2900 (originally £850) which I had been using for SACD. The downside with it is that it is built less well than a Hello Kitty toy and the drive is physically noisy. I tried it with a Beresford DAC and next to each other, it made the Beresford look very luxe indeed.

Hi everyone, I haven't heard from Dave Oliver - has anyone else? I hope everything is okay. Hows the weather over in the UK - we have had such a wet summer, we had drought for about 10 years and now we have had so much rain such a contrast. I tested the sony s370 for cd's its not to bad for a bluray player, another person on another forum said it wasnt that far off for sound compared to his marantz cd7001- I probably wouldnt say its that good. Cheers Steve.

Stephen, Yes, it lacks a bit of imaging but given that the going rate here is £90-100, I think that you would struggle to think of a CD player at that price to beat it. I've used a large piece of Sounddeadsteel on top of mine and am using decent cable. You should try an SACD through it. It's an interesting experience. My only real gripe is the noise from the mech. I'll probably keep it for a year or so and see where things have gone then. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for the site. Hope I'm wrong.
