 eugh, mac's

Hi all, Just want to say, Macs are the way forward! I have a Powerbook which I store all my music, which I now play wirelessly through my amp using iTunes via Airport Express! (I never thought I'd be saying that 20 years ago!) No excuse to say that you're use to Windows - you're just saying you're used to doing things the hard, slow and illogical way! Macs are so straight forward and logical. I agree they can be expensive, but they don't become extinct so quickly! The new operating system has no problem with Windows now, so sharing is not an issue. Take a look at the iMac G5, at just £899 it will last you ages and comes with 160GB hard drive for all your music! All ready for wireless connection as well! What more could you want in life!

You should be able to pick up a reasonably priced Mac on eBay - and they aren't more expensive since you don't have to play that oh-so-expensive upgrading game like you do with Windoze machines. For any music lover, a Mac is essential. Philip mentions how much more logical and starightforward they are, compared to Windoze - he forgot to mentin that they are also aesthetically pleasing - both the hardware and the way the software is displayed. As for Mike's comment, I think the misplaced apostrophe says it all. Julian www.citroenet.org.uk Mater tua criceta fuit, et pater tuo redoluit bacarum sambucus

Couldn't agree more! Except the bit about Sambuca!
Why did I just click on a link to a Citroen Enthusiasts site?!
^ erm, is the punchline about to follow?
Oh yeah and a quick bit of googling reveals that
Mater tua criceta fuit, et pater tuo redoluit bacarum sambucus means
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.
ha ha, elderberries!

You clicked on a link to a Citroen site because I put the link there - because it's my site. You see Macs and Citroens go hand in hand - as does an interest in music. Something to do with the Music of the Spheres... Julian

"As for Mike's comment, I think the misplaced apostrophe says it all."
i suck at english, i don't really care about how many errors like that i make, i know for one thing, i type a hell of a lot better than most people my age
and do you assume that i don't have to use macs? i have to use logic 7 and sibelius on a powermac g5 at college, and can't stand it. i would much rather use the worse version of logic (6) on windows
I think a nerve might have been touched there!
Anyway, gonna stop now before this poor guy gets put off Macs and PCs for life!
ha, elderberries! Agreed, that is funny!

I guess it's all down to personal taste - I am obliged to use pee seas at clients' offices and apart from the sheer ugliness of Windoze machines, what really gets me is how unintuitive they are to use. Recently set up a wireless network at home - 1 Mac and four of those emperor's new clothes devices - it took 15 minutes to set the Mac up and 5 hours and the assistance of a geek to set up the othr machines. Can you imagine if Microsoft manufactured hi fi kit? It would take hours to set it up and then it would stop working for no discernable reason three times daily. To stop a CD from playing, you would have to press the Start button. The kit would be unimaginably ugly - not at all the sort of thing you would want in your sitting room. --

i really don't understand how people can say windows is hard to use and unintuitive, i set up a wireless network here, the 2 desktops connected straight to the router when i plugged in the cards, and the laptop gets used between 2 different networks, and it's just a matter of logging on to connect, that was all there was to set up, firefox worked fine first time on all 3 too

I personally like Macs in preference to Windows and have a greater respect for their design department than that of Microsoft.
I actually run windows though because when it comes to software, it's a lot cheaper and Macs are a so-and-so to upgrade when technology moves on.
Macs are lovely kit if you have to use a computer for a limited number of primarily creative functions and are the sort of person who buys a new computer when it becomes out of date rather than progressively upgrading.

yeah, macs VS pc's is very much 'what youre used to'... Most PC peeps say, 'erg! how do ya right-click???' 'where's the program menu??'
but the big question is compatability, if you use the web a lot... WMV player/plugins, how do you play them??
http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2317502 is one - sometimes the only format is WMV...
the other factor is cost- to upgrade my ancient 2Ghz pc to a full 4Ghz, 64bit model would only cost me about £250... :):)
and how much to replace your mac??
want to upgrade to wireless networking on a pc? no problem, tons of choice, usb, pci...
mac? you have to get 'airport express'
How do you right click on a Mac? With the right button of course! How do you play WMVs on a Mac? With Microsoft Media Player of course! How much does it cost to replace a Mac? Well, since it isn't necessary as often as it is to replace a PC, it might very well be cheaper in the long run - must admit, I haven't costed it... Macs ship with Airport Express (apart from the Macmini). You can also use USB, Ethernet, Firewire, Blue Tooth... And Macs come with Garageband which is worth its weight in gold - http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/ Julian Marsh www.citroenet.org.uk

garageband? why did apple buy emagic?
Sorry I've not been around but I thought I'd unplug myself from the matrix and have a weekend offline.
Interesting stuff but I think I'm gonna go for a PC, stick with what I know. That said how good is garageband? I have Reason and Cubase on the PC and can't imagine it's any better or more sophisticated than those two?
Mike - I think I'm going to chicken out of building my own computer since I discovered on eBay that I can get a 200gb HD, 1gb Ram, 16xDVD RW etc, etc with TFT and mouse for about [or as Julian might say 'circa' :0)] £550-600 including delivery. Not too bad yes?
yeah well it shows how long it's been since I have seen a mac - the last I saw had only *one* mouse button!! - and I am amazed that any decent 'mac fan' would let MS stuff near it!! I hear that the 'safari' mac browser is far better than any others...
A long time ago, we had a specialized 'Mac room' for CAD - but the 'bigwigs' said it was too expensive to upgrade(they totally ignored the fact that OSX and more memory/HD would be cheaper), so went for PCs....
and no, people dont replace their PC's often at all - its far simpler and cheaper to replace the individual parts when needed! - this gives rise to the press story that 'the PC is dead' because almost no-one is buying 'whole' PC's any more...
BTW I put DELL in the same category as the mac, as their motherboard cannot be upgraded either - it's a custom part, to fit in a custom case...
As far as I'm concerned windows is intuitive and very esy to use, a mac on the other hand is confusing and I have a tough time getting them to do what I want them to.
Personally I think Apple should just focus on what they do best; making mp3 players.
