I have a pair of Technics RP DJ1200 headphones which I've had for ages and used regularily until they stopped working on one side. A wiggle of the conecting wires confirmed it was a cable problem. I had a go at it myself but the wires are coated in some kind of varnish and it's beyond my ablities to fix them. They look quite devilish things to work on as I couldn't see how to take apart some parts.
So, I need advice. Are there any companies out there who would do this at a reasonable price? I can get a new pair of Sennheiser 25SPs for £64 so I'm not willing to pay too much.
I prefer the Technics to the Sennheisers but I'm thinking of getting two pairs of headphones: 1) closed back, lightweight, rugged pair for use with an MP3 when travelling, backpacking, etc. 2) open back, more audiophile pair for use with my Music Fidelity X-Cans at home.
The Technics are a bit bulky and the HD25s are so much smaller and lighter. Hmmm, I can see myself getting the HD25s anyway but I'd still like to get these Technics working again.

In answer to your question, if you can get the Sennhheiser HD25s for £64, that's a bargain, and i probably wouldn't go to the hassle of repairing your old Technics 'phones. As for open backs, it depends how much you're willing to spend. For sub-£100 you could go for the Grado SR60s or for £100+ the Sennheiser HD555s or the HD595s are decent...
Don't worry, it'll make sense in a minute! You see Concorde was a noisy bird on the inside as well as the outside so passengers were provided with a pair of good quality, closed back, compact headphones. Yes, British Airways supplied it's Concorde passengers with Sennheiser HD25Sps!
Now, here's the really interesting bit. Since, Concorde is no longer flying, there are unused stocks of these which are making their way onto the market. I've just bought a pair on Ebay for £36 (+£3 p&p)!
I'd have liked the HD25s but, at £119, they're too much money for me. The HD25SPs are only 155g which is a lot less than my old Technics. That's important to me because of the lightweight backpacking I do (titanium cookware, carbon fibre tent pegs, etc!). In fact, I think it was through Outdoors Magic that I learned about AVR.
A good pair of open backs is a future purchase and I'll be back for advice nearer the time!

Hey, iv seen those typs of headphone wires... theres 2 wires for each headphone, unlike the avrage 3 wire ones, and they have some sort of fabric thread runing thru the wires, and the metal wiring has sortof... a coting or something, iv heard ppl saying you can use a lighter to burn off the fabric and the coting, and your left with just the raw, conductive metal which cand be spliced or whatever, im just worried that itl affect the frequency responce of my igrados, im gonna give it a shot sometime soon, il letcha know how it goes, found this site in a google search on "rewire headphones"
