Hi Listeners
I have recently bought a rotel rcd 1072 player. I am happy with it, yet the upgrade bug has not died and I am thinking of having it upgraded. It sits on a set of cones and the mains lead is of audiophile quality running into a mains conditioner.
Trichord or Audiocom offer a large range of mods.
My budget runs to about a grand. Has anyone on this site had experience of modified cd players? Was is worth it?
I wonder how much of a "placebo" effect there is with these things. I have paid for it so it must be an improvement, right?
Paul.

If you are happy with the player, why mess with it? You may improve it, you may make it worse or you may do absolutely nothing and pay good money for it.

The mods you mention have their fans and have their detractors. The Trichord are generally well respected, improving the clock of the player. That said, most of those who praise the improvement the most use the Trichord in association with an aftermarket DAC, where timing accuracy of the clock appears to be more important. As an upgrade to a standalone player, I'd be hesitant to recommend it.

I'm probably the least competent person to recommend any of this, though... I think most of this sector of the market is sold to people who never read 'The Emperor's New Clothes' as a kid.

Hi Alan
You have convinced me to spend the cash somewhere else.
You have confirmed my own thoughts really.

Spending large sums on Hi Fi seems a big variable, to-day I visited a dealer, who in the past has demonstrated Quad ESLs to me. With the purpose of buying a CD player,
I was looking for a small unit and it was suggested the Cyrus & Quad were the only two.

We set up and listened to the Quad CDs-99, good, I then sugested we forget the small bit and try any other full size players, all demonstrated via my Tripath 100W amp and ESL 2805s.

The Cyrus unit he did not have but we did listen to three players from £600 to £3000 and I have to say I heard no significant differences.

But having gone out with intention and left the shop with nothing, I called in on Tesco and purchased their £22.97 mid range DVD player, and even that was an improvment over the Sony CDP-710 that I wanted to replace, it is also neat and small.

So beware price is no indicator !!!
