I own the Sony RDR-HXD710 which does not have a HDMI output...Sob! Sob!, Will using the Componant Out to a HDTV match that of a upscaling player before i go down the HD Disc/player road,
Thanks ;-)

Ps.I wish i could just use the Componant out to my Sony CRT!

I'd forget upscaling in this case and stick with the player in SDTV mode for a while. As far as I can tell, there isn't a HDTV pathway through anything other than HDMI or DVI connections. I could be wrong, though...

Probably, your best bet is to sit tight until Blu-ray and HD DVD become a bit more established and then make the next big upgrade.

No HDTV pathway other than HDMI or DVI?? What about component?? That's been doing HDTV since HDMI and DVI were still in nappies! :-p

I don't know your Sony, but if it does upscaling over the component out then you're fine. Maybe not *quite* as clean as HDMI but we're talking 95-99% here, depending on the ADCs in your telly (assuming your HDTV is digital, i.e. plasma or LCD).

Duncans right, i had an upscaling player on loan for the weekend, albeit a cheap Tosh, connected with the QED hdmi lead into my Pioneer plasma, expecting it to outshine my Pioneer 575 using component, it didnt! However, i personally could not tell any difference between the two, so for a total outlay of £110, the Tosh held its own with the Pioneers £220, (including cables in both instances)
Maybe the comparison was unfair, especially taking into account the difference in price, but it seems that to get a machine that outdoes a reasonable player using component, you will have to spend a lot more.

As I said, I could be wrong! I've been using HDMI so much recently, I forgot component could support this.

Everyone has an off day!

Nevertheless, I'm still wary of upscaling on cheaper players. It always seems to lose as much as it gains, especially when it comes to crisp motion.
