The format war has barely begun - but who says there has to be a winner..?

I have just read your review of the Toshiba HD-XE1 with particular interest in the comments on it's upscaling of standard DVD. In this respect, how does it stack up against the Marantz DV6001 upscaling capabilities? I was pretty much 'sold' on the idea of the Marantz, after reading your recent review, (I have over 300 SD DVD's) but if the Tosh can upscale just as well, then for 650 quid against 300, I would have HD too!

I'm absolutely staggered how slowly manufacturers are adopting HDMI 1.3.  People can remonstrate all they like about how incremental many of the improvements are but I think they miss the point... I'm going to be spending the better part of three grand (possibly more) replacing my system - there is no way I am spending any of that money twice to upgrade something where I jumped too soon or end up feeling hard done by... that's why I have steadfastly held out for 1080p/24 TVs and HDMI 1.3 end-to-end... if it's taking this long to get HDMI sources how long will we be waiting for a decent selection of AV Amps with it in?

To counter my own argument a little this BD Profile 1.1 thing makes me wonder if the flood of new features will ever slow down long enough for me to commit - my rule of thumb is going to be, if it affects ultimate picture or sound quality - wait; otherwise forget it... they'll probably provide asoftware patch anyway...

Also I'm very interested in this 72Hz thing - very clever.  It's things like this which mean I'm leaning towards buying everything from one manufacturer because of this kind of integrated thnking (though I doubt it's patentable so I guess everyone else will try to jump on this bandwagon).

I couldn’t help but notice a large typo on the blu-ray article. You’ll find that the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Player is available for £299 via Oyyy.co.uk rather than the £1800 in your article. Does this make it a decent buy or does the downscale followed by the upscale process make this a fundamentally bad buy?

Quite right Piercey, it was an outrageous typo, which I've now corrected. The official price is £450, so it's not such a drop as it first seemed. Sorry for any alarm caused.
