Turntable Troubles

Hi! I'm an "old dude" from the States who just joined your website.  I've got an old Technics SLQD35 direct drive turntable from around ' 85. Not much used since ' 90. It still works fine. However, I've been trying to locate an Audio Technia replacement stylus ATN142LP. I am in the process of trying to convert some BRAND NEW still sealed  Mario Lanza recordings from 1968 that I just purchased and converting them to the computer so I can put them on CD.   All the places onlinem, including some in the UK only offer an inferior Eliptical stylus as opposed to the linear stylus I currently have.  As far as I know, Audio Technic no longer offer this stylus. The online website draws a blank.  So, my question is:Is there another type of cartridge/stylus combo that I could purchase for the current turntable?  Or, Do I "bite the bullet" and buy another turntable? And, if so, what kind do you recommend that would be comparable to the above direct drive made by technics?  I don't want to spend $14, 000.00 for a turntable. But, on the other hand, I don't want a piece of crap, either.  If your expertise is not in turntables, perhaps you could point me to someone who's "in the know"?  Thank you for your time and trouble.Best regards,Rob CarducciHouston, TX<!-- toctype = X-unknown --><!-- toctype = text --><!-- text -->

Had a chat with our turntable 'head', Jason Kennedy about this and he reckons you should be able to get an Audio Technica AT-95E cartridge, just check that the Technics has regular half inch slot fixings. If you want to go the whole hog you could do a lot worse than the Rega P3, a quality turntable for a few hundred quid.

Mr. Oliver,

I "reckon" I should thank y'all proper for the info!  I appreciate it.  By the way, is "a few hundred quid" equal to "dollars" in the U.S.?  Thanks, again!

Best regards,

Rob

Happy to help Rob. A dollar is twice as much as a quid (pound) these days, but I know electronic gear tends to be cheaper in the US.

Rob,

Have you tried Needledoctor?  That's usually the first place to go in your part of the world.

Hello Everyone...

My Name is Carly and I am brand new to this forum.

I recently purchased a great used phono player to play some of my old records on...

This Technics SL-QD35 turntable unit is in great condition! However when I tried to put it to use... there was a very low sound output coming from the turntable. It says that it has an 11W output so I am thinking that should be enough. I have phono input in my receiver and just plugged it right in. The sound is terribley low in volume... even after I have it turned way up.

I am thinking... that maybe I need to buy a new cartridge and styus but I am not sure if that is the problem or what even to go with. Also after trying to research this turntable I came across the possibilty of a preamp for the unit. Could the old cartridge be the problem??? I am just dying to hear my old Prince Little Red Corvette 12" in its full 8 minute extented version.

Any help would be greatly appreicated. Thank you ~ Carly

Hi Carly

You probably need a moving coil phono stage (preamp) that connects between your turntable and your receiver. They start at around £50 and go into the hundreds. Do you know what type of cartridge you have, moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC)?

Try www.musonic.co.uk

Vast selection there and AT 95E as well for £25

Hey there Dave...

Thank you for getting back to me and hearing my crys in the cyber world.

I just bought a new cartridge thinking that was the problem to no avail.

I guess I have a (moving magnet) cartridge cuz its an AT90 AUDIO TECHNICA Magnetic Phono Cartridge... does that make sence??

I will take whatever advice you can give... All smiles ~ Carly
