The analogue EPG isn't brilliant but the Freeview EPG is a different animal altogether. It has a search feature that is better than SKY+ and is very user friendly. The only snag is that unlike SKY+ you cannot adjust program start and end unless you set it manually which would be a pain for everything you wanted to record. I recorded a program recently using Freeview EPG and it didn't start recoding until after the opening credits so I lost the geninning of the film.

You forgot to mention the execellent editing features of the Sony RDR HXD870 which I presume are the same as the 250GB 970 that I have. Having frame by frame editing enables you to edit all unwanted frames without transporting the title to a PC. The only drawback is that you have to dub at normal speed but you can dub at high speed if you select Video Mode compatible editing. The only snag with this is that it is only accurate to +/- 12 frames.

I have not owned any other HDD/DVD Recorder so cannot compare but for me this machine gets full marks. Maybe I should have bought the 500GB model as one soon stores upto 50 titles in HQ. Perhaps the only negative feature is that it records in the mode you set not the mode that corresponds to the source.

Hi there. Can you help with some advice. I have an LCD tv with integrated Freeview and I just bought and hooked up a Sony RDR HXD970. Trouble it that over 24 hours later and I dont have an EPG showing. Did all the setup as per the basic setup instructions but so far no luck. When in standby the Sony sometimes shows 'EPG' in its display as if its receiving but alas nothing has arrived yet. Im getting increasingly confused by it as the instruction manual talsk of an external box - something I am not using. All I wish to do is record Freeview using the digital tuner in my Sony HDD/DVD Recorder. Any ideas as to how I should have this all hooked up so I can get my EPG?

I am not an expert, I simply own a Sony HXD970 hooked up to a Sony LCD TV that works, so in principle I should be able to help.

On the Remote there is an Input button. In order to view the EPG on the TV you need to cycle through the inputs and select Freeview Channels. On mine I have Line 1, Line 2, Analogue and Freeview indicated by Channels  D001 to D803. Select the Freeview Channels and press GUIDE on your Remote and the EPG will be displayed on the TV.  Select a programme you want to recrord by highlighting it then pressing the Red button on the Remote. That should place it in your TIMER. Now press the TIMER button on the Remote and your recording schedule should be displayed on the TV. You can now turn the DVD to standby. The TV does not have to be on and at the set time your programme will be recorded.

If you can view a title from the DVD on the TV then you must have the DVD - TV connected correctly. The DVD has its own Freeview and Analogue Tuner so is not relying on the tuner in the TV.

Try the above and let me know the result.

Best of luck

Many thanks David. I'll give that a go tonight. Wasn't aware that you could choose between the recorders digital EPG and the Guide+ system. All I want to do is record and the Guide+ thing is ultra frustrating - especially as its not downloading!! Will report back with my findings on the process you describe.

Hi David. Just thought I'd let you know I've sorted this now thanks. The problem was actually in my Initial setup settings. I was trying to access the recorders digital EPG but the settings were set to Guide+. As soon as I switched it over I had an EPG! Guide+ is now a distant memory. Much appreciated on the advice. Although it wasnt the input selection your advice gave me some persepctive as to how I had the thing set up generally. Cheers.
