Personally, I would avoid ANY system that attempts to use a broadband connexion as a television pipe (so-called IPTV) like the plague.

Given that we are entering a world where most of the industry is trying to sell us televisions that require a data rate of something like 25Mbps, the concept of IPTV is like trying to fill a swimming pool by pee-ing into it. I have no idea what kind of picture quality IPTV claims to offer but from where I'm sitting, the numbers simply do not add up.

The massive sales drive for IPTV appears to offer, for the most part, very little compared to Freeview (which is, er, free) and a subsidised PVR - typical cost to buy, c. £150. As for the on-demand, extra cost, content - what kind of quality can be transmitted down a typical home broadband connexion? I'd have thought that the concept of television delivery down a telephone line should have waited until BT could offer fibre to the home.

Just how bad is an industry attempting to sell us 50" HD tellies with content delivered via a link seldom capable of more than 5Mbps?
