Reception problems

just replaced my old and unrepairable (CD drive) Sony with a shiny new JVC KD-DB711 CD receiver.
The JVC is hooked up to the original arial, plus there is a new dedicated DAB windscreen arial. The original arial worked fine with the Sony, giving excellent FM reception, (I live in deepest Essex), to various London stations, but the reception from the JVC is atrocious, the stations keep dropping out etc, plus when the station is lost for a second and then 're-starts', it picks up from the point that reception was lost, as if there is a permanently recording hard-drive.
The DAB reception is also iffy to say the least!
Q: - has anyone else had this problem with this receiver?
Would an antenna booster be recommended?
If so, has anyone got any recommendations as to the best make, model etc?
