SUNSHINE SUPERMAN: THE JOURNEY OF DONOVAN (SPV Music DVD)
Donovan has too often been written of as a poor man’s Dylan. Either that or the proto-hippy poet whose repertoire didn’t really stretch beyond his two biggest hits, ‘Catch The Wind’ and ‘Colours’.
This 3 hour epic puts the record straight with intriguing early footage of Mr Leitch, and his mate Gypsy Dave, bumming around the beaches and B&Bs of England before Ready Steady Go! made him an overnight star in 1965.
There’s also lots of live slices from various European and American TV shows, platforming the dozens of great songs the Glaswegian beatnik cooked up on his travels. Dylan himself, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are all in there too.
Like the man himself, it’s a bit naïve at times, but, in this jaded age, that’s half its charm. An amazing DVD about an amazing man – and an amazing time.
