The topic of mains noise is a thorny one for many of our readers, evidently throwing up as many questions as answers. Although it's generally accepted that mains filters and power cords can provide a purer sound for your hi-fi...

Fred. I know that you are really a good guy at heart because I've seen you offer excellent advice elsewhere in this forum but you really need to broaden your horizons a bit mate and give one of those leads a try. You never know - you might like it!

Kind regards, Bill.

So if i hadn't prevously given good advice would you class me as a bad guy simply because I know that mains leads can't affect the sound of a hi-fi?

Fred... you have a choice : "take the Red Pill and see just how far the Rabbit-hole goes, or take the Blue Pill and return to a blissfully uneventful life within The Matrix...." ;}

I think Bill has a point here.

Hi Chris,

Heard some of the Audio Note gear at the last Scottish Hifi Exhibition. Superb. Even went back the following day just to re-audition some of them. They defied just about every rule in the hifi book. Huge speaker boxes shoved right into corners for instance. Spectacularly good results.

You are wasting your time mate. Fred will take the blue pill everytime - he is happy in his blinkered little world, and doesn't have the imagination to step outside it

(Don't waste your time with the predictable insult Fred, I have more exciting things to do than read it -  my neighbour has just painted the front of the house, and watching it dry is just fascinating....)

"Imagination" being the operative word as far as differences in the sound of mains leads are concerned.

Is there anyone out there with a knowledge of electronics that believes in the mains lead sound idea?

Err NO, I have never met anyone in the profession world of sound reproduction who takes the slightest notice of these ideas.

Re: Fred will take the blue pill everytime - he is happy in his blinkered little world, and doesn't have the imagination to step outside it, now get a few facts here, knowledge of technology is not the same as being blinkered, in reality stupidity is more blinkering, lack of awareness is more blinkering.

Knowledge and understanding is what allows real judgement of good and better, not imagination, IMO.

In the past I have offered £1000 to anyone who can reliably and repeatable tell one cable from another, I believe Mr Randy offered $1000,000 for the same test, NO ONE HAS COME FORWARD.

I rest my case. John...

Great to see you back on form John, and you,re right on mate,i cant tell the difference between one cable and another,be it £5 or £100 and as for mains conditioners, well i havent a clue what they are supposed to do,how do condition mains power, i always thought that was the job of the internal transformers.Off to buy a hair conditioner now,see if it works, considering i,m bald......Dave

Good luck with the hair conditioner, sure it has a better chance than a mains conditioner, like it might even do something. However I have yet to find the 'life' conditioner - maybe I would go for it, but it would be expensive.

Come to think of it, the greatest improvement to any system has to be a change of 'perception', in my younger years that was called 'whacky baccy', results unbelievable.

But not 'politically correct', maybe we now need a 'designer drug' that can actually enhance hearing.

It would of course be incredibly expensive, but nowhere nearly as much as a cable upgrade.

However as a business venture it does have many plus points, unlike the cable upgrade, it is not a 'once only purchase', you would need to buy it for every listening session, unlike the cable it is an 'on going market', over some ten years it would reward far more than the most outrageously priced cable, and your 'satisfied customers' would come back for more.

Anyone interested, it would require sorting 'smarties' into colour groups such that each colour appealed to a customer requirement, say red for a warm sound, blue for a crisp sound, black for reggie etc.

Maybe sell them for only 10P a pop, not bad markup for a smartie.

Not bad for a new hearing experience, not bad for Hi Fi beyond your dreams, maybe even a good choice for the 'canny'.

Hi John,we do have a designer drug for enhanced listening pleasure, its called alchohol, the more you drink the better it sounds..............take care mate..............Dave......p.s glad to see you back on form again, have you been conditioned???
Show/hide user stats

Dave, I'm only alcohol conditioned, but then I never do reply before T2. However can't quite go along with you on this one, say at T1 it dose not sound too perfect then by T2 one would rather watch telly and in my case by T3 I would be on this site writing more drivel.

Apart from the business sense, I can't earn out of people drinking, whereas selling smarties at 10p a pop is a better earner than anything in my past!

Just thought this may be of interest to people reading this thread, especially John.

Thank you. Brilliant mate, I've always thought Russ Andrews was a conning scum bag, unfortunately in life it takes a court case to find reality, only last year I challenged my bank over charges, they gave in, they refunded me, but only as a 'gesture' and in no way an admission of 'wrong doing' but only as a gesture. Unfortunately the world is full of Conn artistes but it is also full of helpful trusting good people, the secret seems to be the ability to distinguish the two.
