In wall speakers

It seems the latest thing in AV is to have everything hidden away and completely unobtrusive: flat plasma/lcd screens, professional wiring jobs hiding everything, growth of sonos like control systems so the Hi-Fi equipment can be stoed away and controlled independently etc.

Continuing this trend I found these 'in wall' speakers which are actually set into the wall and run parallel with the wall when out of use and extend out automatically when in use. If the sound quality is there these could be a brilliant purchase. Question is what an earth IS going to visible in my front room? It'll just be an empty box soon!

I don't know about you Rodney, but I think I'd rather keep everythin out in the open. I don't doubt I'd be impressed by sci-fi-like speakers appearing magically from a wall, but there's nothing quite like having everything on show. My hi-fi equipment cuts the space in my living room by around a third..... but it looks darn good. Think the Mrs may disagree though.

You make a point there is something to be said for leaving it all on display, namely any problems are easier to address and it makes life easier to upgrade. If all of your cables are hidden under the floor and inside the walls imagine the fun you'd have replacing them!

I am looking for a high quality In Wall Hi Fi speaker to listen to rock music as well as surround sound.

Any suggestions on a high quality dual purpose In Wall?

I am more interested in reviews and opinions and not only specs. Sometimes the better specs dont necessarily make a great sounding speaker

Hi Robert,

without trying to blatently advertise, we are on the verge of release of our own in-wall, on-wall speaker system to the general public that has been designed for accuracy over blast your head off levels. However, being phase accurate to a considerable level does help travel where phase inaccurate designs can falter and become muddy once you leave the drect firing line of the drivers.

These are not going to be the cheapest speakers on the planet by any means but they come as a fully active system where the active crossover/amplifier will be a separate unit. They utilise ridgid carbon drivers with the physical frontage of the speakers being approximately 600mm high by 500mm wide but the depth front to back is just 48mm. There are no defined figures at this time that can be quoted and is some respects, these are not always relevant. Inneficiant speakers can take a high powerred amp to drive them to attain a said SPL (Sound Pressure Level) where as an efficient speaker can take far less grunt to achieve the same SPL. Plus, passive crossovers generally do not reproduce in the same way as a carefully designed active one.

One interesting fact has been made far more clear since investigating this line of speaker system, and that is, i can  now weedle out the good from the bad recordings in my collection. the bad sound the same as they always did but the good are now allowed to show off and its amazing what you dont know your missing until you hear it.

PS: Musically, my own tastes vary somewhat as i sit here listening to Classic FM and since readin your post, recalling one of the best concerts i ever went to by a subtle little band called AC/DC.

Are these in-wall speakers any good? Apart from tha fact that you can't see them anymore which I really appreciate; is the sound quality good? What about vibration of the speakers? Doesn't the fact that they are build-in has an effect on the quality of the sound?

I don't believe this new discovery though.

However, I couldn't find any reviews on in-wall speakers, just one model called WHD UP 40-8 ...
