most pre/pwr amps use two RCA phono cables (L + R channels). These should be easy to buy/source :-)
Expensive/high end units used balanced XLR connections, since they offer better noise immunity, and permit the power amps to be placed close to loudspeakers. But these probably be very expensive units.
Electricaly speaking most pre-amps will work with most power amps. I seriously doubt whether electrical compatibility will be an issue. (The pre-amp should have a lowish output impedance 500ohms or less, and the pwr amp should have a high input impedance 5K ohms or higher.)
More important issue is that the pre-amp and power amp are complementary sonically speaking. This should not be a issue for the same make, but could be an issue if mixing makes.
My advice is just to listen carefully, and let your ears be your guide.
Also if you are new to hifi, go visit some dealers with your favorite CDs, and listen to equipment at your budget and beyond your budget. This will help 'tune' your ears, and set a reasonable framework as to what you can expect for a given amount of money.
