Review: Sonos ZP100 Digital Music System
There have been a few low-cost, wireless options that have emerged recently, but none look so good or show as much promise as the Sonos digital music system...

Forgot to mention.... don't forget, that the Sonos can be used as a wireless streaming pre-amp and connected into, for example, an AUX input in your existing amp so you can continue to use your existing system. The Sonos ZP would, in this scenario, only strem the music in, and then pass the audio via it's pre-outs to your amp of choice. Best of both worlds!!

PS Just got a 60GB iPod and all the music on it is in AIFF and it sounds superb! We owe it to our kids to educate them and stop them thinking that music is MP3!

PPS - In response to Mike Watson, no the equipment most certainly is not more important than the music in my opinion, that is why I make the point above about MP3 and compressed music in general. I would much rather have a select number of CDs (which with today's disk sizes can mean 100+) ripped to my MP3 player/iPod which I chop and change when I want, and listen to them in a high quality uncompressed format, then have 1,000 CDs ripped in MP3.

Rant over.

Ollie the 770 is definately going to be released, so you can crack on with your home brew sonos alternative - I'm looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Hey Brucie, yeah it looks like it has now been released, unfortunately it's out of stock.

I'm thinking that I'm going to wait until the new year to get mine (dreaming of January sale - but it will probably never happen!).

I'm pretty hectic at work at the moment and one of the things I need to do is test out database stuff on linux. But once thats done then I'm going to pick back up on this - any developments I make I'll let you guys know about!

Cheers

Ollie

The range of Media Streamin boxes available from Dabs has increased quite a bit too:

Message for Dave Oliver - When you say 'it's compressed music we're talking about' in your review of the Sonos system, what exactly do you mean? My CD collection is backed up onto a network drive as AIFF files so they're not getting anywhere near any compression, but is it the wireless transfer process you are thinking of, does it somehow also add compression? Haven't bought the Sonos yet but I'm tempted.

Hi Joakim

At the time of the review I was playing MP3 and AAC files and I'm afraid I don't recall which (if any) lossless formats the Sonos supported at that time. I know that it now supports AIFF files among others so you should be good to go for uncompressed streaming.
