hello everyone;

i've had my 20gb 4th gen click wheel ipod for about 13-14months now and its decided now its out of warrenty to stop working properly!

the click wheel no longer works. the buttons on it do so i can skip and fast forward, pause, turn off and go to menu. but i cant change volume, or playlist.

so i can listen to it but at the volume it wants me to and the song it wants me to listen to!

some1 has mentioned try use the remote. which i cant do til next week as i dont have it to hand.

so i was wondering does anyone/ has anyone had the same problem and how have the overcome them?

thanks very much

You could always try a master reset - you'd have to re-transfer all the songs over but it might sort out the problems you have. I can't remember off hand how to do it but I think it's in the manual, if not it's on the internet I'll have a look for you when I get a minute later today

ive tried the reset with holding play and the menu button but its still being an awkward git! havent heard of the master reset tho...

What about the restore your iPod option with the iPod updater on your PC or Mac?

i cant reset it through my computer as it decided the break the week before... great so have been looking at hardware issues and gunna try and get a broken shell off ebay.one with a cracked screen and take the click wheel from it and see if that goes ok.... found a site that repairs your ipod www.ukipodrepairs.com but they wanted £50 i think.... no thank you ! lol

it started to work last nite, click wheel fully working volume and everything. but then this morning it was back to its old tricks again...

Hmmm, I can't seem to find anything about a master reset but I'm sure I've seen it before. Maybe I imagined it.

It sound s to me like your iPod is trying to fight for its life so fingers crossed it'll just cure itself.

ive plugged it into the laptop a few times, changed bits about with play lists then it works fine...

then the click wheel wont work so i put it on hold and back off hold then it works fine.

ok everyone, new battery arrived and successfully installed into my ipod. i shall let it run for a week then write up a little review on the little thing.

Coops, how does the iPod actually open up, you mention a special tool but I just can't see an obvious way for it open! It appears impossible - so how DOES it open up?

where the plastic cover meets the metal back there is a line. its held together by clips that you can pop out. they give you like a small 'glue spreader' like you had when you where at primary school.... that you can force into the ridge and run it round the whole join and eventually it will pop open

mine came with instructions as wel... it took me about 30mins from first attmept to completely finsih and have the pod playin again..
