I have bought a PVR the 'toppy' Topfield 5800pvr. An amazing bit of kit, but struggling to find the right connector. I used to have the output via S-Video, but now my DVD is using that, my TV, a 17" Relysis has component input. My toppy has component out, but via the scart socket. I have been to all the shops in my high street, and I can not see a lead to suit. I found a Scart to Composite?? Red, White and yellow leads, is this the same? or can it be used?
Hi Rob, not sure what you mean by 'component out via the scart socket'. You sure you don't mean composite via scart?
Component carries video signal only and has three separate connectors red, blue and green. Like you say composite is red, white and yellow and carries audio as well, although the quality is inferior to scart.
Has your TV not got a scart socket? You could just run the Topfield into the TV via that, no?
thanks for the reply, The TV has no scart, a Relysis, basically a monitor, it has sort of 3 inputs... AV1 which is CBVS (composite): S-Video also on AV1, and Component YUV type on AV2. My freeview box, the topfield is a beauty, £300 worth. The literature says it outputs composite, s-video, rgb scart, and component via the scart. I used to have it thru my S-Vid, but now my DVD is using that. I have it through composite now, but the quality is noticably worse. It seems a shame not to be able to use the component, but I can't seem to find anything like a Scart to component lead. Salesmen in Dixons and the like have no idea. I only need the video input. sound can be output by the audio rca's or digital when i get the right lead.... watch out for the next thread! thanks again for replying Will.
oh by the way, the dvd, a philips has NOT got component out (cheapo). if it had i would have used that for the dvd, and carried on using S-Vid for the PVR, alas, no such luck.
There is such a lead - I have one but I can't remember where I got it from - a net cable shop anyway. So it is worth continuing your hunt for SCART-RGB to RGB plugs
YUV is not available on a SCART socket. See here http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/eprebel/SoundAndVision/Engineering/SCART.html
What you need is an active device that strips the sync from the Composite video and converts the RGB to YUV with the addition of the stripped sync. Such boxes are available for under £100, but you might like to look at a more sophisticated box such as the Kramer FC-15 http://www.kramerelectronics.com/indexes/item.asp?pic=57>
Hey thanks Andre, that was what i did need. in the end I bought a new television, used the old one in my caravan. I have my toppy connected via RGB scart, my samsung has a scart. But thanks for taking the time to send these links, I can't believe how hard it was to find such a cable, and to how ignorant some shop assistants were. Myself included, it was only after some homework that I did find out exactly what I needed.
