Hi everyone, About to invest in 50 or 52 inch 1080p tv and have an old dvd player (sony 7700 which was okay in its day) and sky+ as my main sources. Does it make sense to get a receiver that upscales and therefore helps improves disk and sky playback on the new set? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. No fixed thoughts on the tv or the amp yet...

Sorry nobody got back to you sooner Paul - that's just the way it be's sometimes I guess. If you're getting a screen as big as that it certainly makes sense to get the best quality source you can. Upscaling will make the most of the discs you already have and anything that's not already HD basically. Decided on your TV or amp yet?

Hi David, Purchased a panny 50" plasma, the 700, upgraded sky+ to sky HD and bought a ps3 (on the basis of bluray, linkage to my mac servers for media distribution and maybe a little bit of gaming). Amp wise I am waiting for the onkyo 606 very much on the premis of the original post, Does it make sense to plug everything into an upscaling amp (which I believe the 606 is?) and let the amp do the heavy lifting when it has to (sky tv SD channels, avi streamed from the mac into the ps3???) and allow pass thru when it doesn't (1080p blue ray from ps3). regards and thanks in advance for any thoughts you have in this area, paul.

Hi paul, Sky HD has 1080i upscaling for sd channels already in one box this would be better connected direct to screen. same with playstation that already has 1080p. less wires more quality.

thanks carl, thats a good point although having read your post I've come to the conclusing that the SD channels on sky still seem to have quite alot of artefacts in th final HD presentation on my panasonic. I think some tinkering is required to see whether the tv upscaling does a better job than the sky box. I guess if I want to provide 5.1 surround sound set-up I'm not going to get away from the need to run wires through the amp.

Hi Paul, Try realigning the sat dish to give you stronger signal for picture, 1080i will flicker on horizontal lines within a Hd ready screen only option is to turn down sharpness !. ....Carl.

I investigated this problem a year ago when I purchased my screen. My system is Toshiba 47WLT66, Pioneer AX2 amp & DV686 & Sky HD box. There is no easy answer to your question. As a mater of fact there is no definitive answer. Let me explain: Every device i.e. TV, amp, DVD player and Sky box has a scalar built in. What you want to do is find out which device has the best scalar. What I can tell you is that the scalar in the Sky HD box is poor. Leave the SKY HD scaling at “Automatic”. This will result in the HDMI output to be in the native resolution of the channel/transmission. This is what I do: Sky HD box set at “Automatic” Pioneer AX2 at 1080i scaling (because the 47WLT66 can only accept 1080i) 47WLT66 at “Exact Scan” setting. Pioneer DV686 at native scaling. You would have to experiment a bit. What I do suggest is that when you use the PS3, set the amp at Bypass i.e. direct “no scaling” because you do not want any scaling between the PS3 and the Pan. I hope this helps.

Abbas, I intend to try that configuration once the amp turns up (onkyo 606 is now available). Doesnt appear to be any upscaling amps that go to 1080p at the moment (onkyo 1080i). Anybody any thoughts on this...

Hi Ronan I had a quick look at Pioneer etc. but information on manufacturers site is limited. The Onkyo utilises Faroudja DCDi Edge™ deinterlacer and you may be better off setting the output of the amp to 720p. Don't forget that the Pan also has a deinterlacer and scaler on board. I would not worry about the 'p' too much (ha! ha!). As I said before there is no definitive answer to this. Try, experiment and see... I am almost tempted to get hold of a 606 and try it out.... There is some interesting information on this site: http://www.gnss.com/tch_dcdi_overview.phtml
