Ok Dave, thanks mate, I hate misundertandings though they do happen rather more often than I would like. Now something I seem to keep harping on about, you will notice, is not individual makes or individual companies, but simply technology, listen to ANY electrostatic and you will note that they do have a sound that is different, listen to any PWM amp, whether that be class 'D' or 'T' or 'Z' it will have a different sound, compare any reflex speaker to any non reflex and the differences are obviouse. Now my understanding is rather simplistic, a speaker with no box simply must be better, an amp that cannot have crossover distortion must be better, a way of recording music that does not involve a stylus wiggleing in a groove simply must be better. Maybe a simplistic view but I can hear one teaspoon of sugar in an average mug of tea.... John...
Much as I agree with you about box-less speakers and how good well set up Electrostatics can sound (I'm a bit biased but I also respect and admire the strength and beauty of the Magneplanar concept)...Dave has already expressed a preference for Magnepan and these also happen to be box-less panel speakers?
Thanks Bill, I think it a first to actually have agreement, great stuff, however not quite finished on the sugar yet as it is such a simple test involving no technology and simply a hearing test that anyone can do, I think in bone china cups and accurately measured quantities then less than half a teaspoon should be heard, incidentally why is sugar spelt without the 'H' .......... Hello Bill,John,to answer the last question first,why is there no H in sugar,in the English sugar is pronounced shugar,but in German its pronounced sugar,maybe thats where it comes from,you sweet talking sod.Checked out those Maggie 20.0 and the 20.1,trying to work out what 2.068 is in feet,christ thats nearly 7 feet tall,mind you the ceiling here is 9 foot so thats not a problem,and i do have the room to let them "breath"its just that i,m not sure that getting rid of these trannies is a good idea,i do have a buyer who,s interested in them,a woman in Buxton Derbyshire,and she,s offered a good price,but i am not sure,going to need to audition them,but as they were made in 2001 are they still available,and who sells them,going to think about this.........Take Care.......Dave

Had you been contemplating the MG20s with so little headroom left over it may have left you wondering about ceiling treatments.... (John could probably help here because this is getting further into his domain).
I don't know what the exact dispersion characteristic of the Maggies is but I'm willing to bet they have a lot in common with conventional speakers at low to mid-frequencies. So some ceiling treatment might be helpful in this case.....even for the 1.6s.....?
Hi Bill, David, in real sound absorption properties strips of carpet about 4" away from the ceiling is about as good as it gets but would look awful and be pretty impractical. But there are two sides to treating a room, one go for sound absorption ie removing reflections or go for sound diffusion that simply re diffuses the wave front so as not to create reflections, personally I use a bit of both. I think skyline diffusers on the ceiling would look great and make a sound statement beyond most others.... John...
