Hi Dave,

Now that's what I call a conversion !

Don't get the 1.6s though....go for for the 2.0 then you'll get more serious bass too !! ( )

All the best.................Bill.

Dave,

Sorry got the decimal in the wrong place MG20

FYI....

Admittedly this was back in 2001 but since when did speaker technology "date"

Ok Dave, thanks mate, I hate misundertandings though they do happen rather more often than I would like. Now something I seem to keep harping on about, you will notice, is not individual makes or individual companies, but simply technology, listen to ANY electrostatic and you will note that they do have a sound that is different, listen to any PWM amp, whether that be class 'D' or 'T' or 'Z' it will have a different sound, compare any reflex speaker to any non reflex and the differences are obviouse. Now my understanding is rather simplistic, a speaker with no box simply must be better, an amp that cannot have crossover distortion must be better, a way of recording music that does not involve a stylus wiggleing in a groove simply must be better. Maybe a simplistic view but I can hear one teaspoon of sugar in an average mug of tea.... John...

Hi John,

Much as I agree with you about box-less speakers and how good well set up Electrostatics can sound (I'm a bit biased but I also respect and admire the strength and beauty of the Magneplanar concept)...Dave has already expressed a preference for Magnepan and these also happen to be box-less panel speakers?

So, overall, I'd say you have agreement there?

...and you finished on the sugar again..... ( )

Kind regards,

Bill.

Thanks Bill, I think it a first to actually have agreement, great stuff, however not quite finished on the sugar yet as it is such a simple test involving no technology and simply a hearing test that anyone can do, I think in bone china cups and accurately measured quantities then less than half a teaspoon should be heard, incidentally why is sugar spelt without the 'H' .......... John...

Hello Bill,John,to answer the last question first, why is there no H in sugar,in the English sugar is pronounced shugar, but in German its pronounced sugar, maybe thats where it comes from, you sweet talking sod.Checked out those Maggie 20.0 and the 20.1,trying to work out what 2.068 is in feet, christ thats nearly 7 feet tall, mind you the ceiling here is 9 foot so thats not a problem, and i do have the room to let them "breath"its just that i,m not sure that getting rid of these trannies is a good idea,i do have a buyer who,s interested in them,a woman in Buxton Derbyshire, and she,s offered a good price, but i am not sure, going to need to audition them, but as they were made in 2001 are they still available, and who sells them, going to think about this.........Take Care.......Dave

See Dave my interest is not simply talking Hi Fi but simply design per say, whether that be, language, interior design or the counties economics it all comes down to design, sorry I cannot comment on the 'maggies' as I know so little about them but suggest a model number and I will look... Thanks for the time... John...

Hi Dave,

Had you been contemplating the MG20s with so little headroom left over it may have left you wondering about ceiling treatments.... (John could probably help here because this is getting further into his domain).

I don't know what the exact dispersion characteristic of the Maggies is but I'm willing to bet they have a lot in common with conventional speakers at low to mid-frequencies. So some ceiling treatment might be helpful in this case.....even for the 1.6s.....?

Something tasteful though....not egg boxes...

Show/hide user stats
Hi Bill, David, in real sound absorption properties strips of carpet about 4" away from the ceiling is about as good as it gets but would look awful and be pretty impractical. But there are two sides to treating a room, one go for sound absorption ie removing reflections or go for sound diffusion that simply re diffuses the wave front so as not to create reflections, personally I use a bit of both. I think skyline diffusers on the ceiling would look great and make a sound statement beyond most others.... John...

Dave...

Evolution 202...nice choice.....you realise this could be the first instalment in a new Krell mega-system

Carl....good find on the T/T setup article.....

MY next dilemma will be siting, or I should say the avoidance of siting, the next (non-suspended) turntable close to the Vantages subwoofers.

Back to Stat Matters.....an intriguing review of the CLX attached....

This is pretty impressive considering what kind of benchmark products the Reviewer is comparing them to....(there is a brief mention of the Quad 2905 which a lot of us will have mused over)

You are left with the feeling that armed with an appropriate subwoofer these things will conquer anything under $100K....(still can't help wondering how well the big Statement E2s would compare with the CLX )

http://forums.avguide.com/viewtopic.php?t=3863&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=100

After all the effort that Martin Logan have put into this model's design, they might at least have come up with a more inspirational name for the product other than something which is reminiscent of a mainstream French saloon car (!)

Best regards and happy reading.................................Bill.

P.S ...should have mentioned the "Review" is shortly after the photograph near the top of the page...

Hi Bill.Looked at that the photograph of those M.L.speakers,impressive,but with all that gear on the floor, how does the owner actually play records, without tripping over somthing or other.......Dave

Interesting Dave.....I never considered that mate...maybe because mine looks as awkward to access as this !

There is some seriously expensive gear on display there...and I recognise that turntable, but have always had doubts about it's "modular" pod construction (I don't feel that tonearms and platters should ever be sitting on separate bases)

Well spotted nevertheless...........................Bill.

Hi Bill, good to be back, take a look at Mr Townsend's site as he really does seem to be at the cutting edge of TT technology. Having watched 'Tomb Raider' again I noticed a serious TT player that Laura had playing classical music on whilst she performed some outrageous exercises, I wonder what was it?

I wonder if this was a serious statement of life, but in the film the 'computer geek' listened to CD whilst the star had a serious TT player, really quite a weird film, take away all the exceptional physical performances and it does seem to have an underlying message though I fail to really understand it.

John...

Hi John,

Welcome back,

Hope you appreciate how everyone has supported you and that you will reward our loyalty with measured responses in future.

OK that said, I think the turntable you are referring to in Tomb Raider is a Clearaudio Master Reference

See   THIS TT , but I am sure Bill will correct me if I am wrong, it is a piece of art as well as a superb turntable.

All the best Electro.

Show/hide user stats

Hi Electro, yes I certainly do and I thank you all for persuading Dave to a change of mind, having looked at the Clearaudio site, it really is a masterpiece of engineering and looks like many £1000s however I'm sure the sound track did not originate from it, I will view that part of the film again and confirm. Though the point I was trying to make was the perceived association between the 'best' and 'average' was by the use of this TT thereby implanting a subliminal tag as to the benefits of vinyl and would you believe it all those wonderful interior shots were in a studio in Pinewood, all made of 2X1 timber frames and plywood, unbelievable when one sees the final film. Such is the art of film-making, it is 'kidology' on a massive scale and maybe when one sees this level of 'kidology' then one begins to realise just how powerful it can be and just how easily we can be kidded. I remember the first time I saw a brick wall on a film set it looked so real that even touching it did not convince me, I had to see the back before I realized it was a 'flat' a 2X1 timber frame and plywood.

Thanks for your input, will try not to have any goes in the future, however being passionate about the subject does sometimes make it difficult... John...
