HI I have a dilema, I'm very temped to buy the new Pioneer LX50 DVD player as I have an extensive collection of standard DVDs and am in no hurry to start buying Bluerays discs. So am I better off buying this DVD player or would say a Blueray player like the Pioneer LX70A give me as just as good quality playback of my standard DVDs and while providing me with a Blueray player at the same time. I have a Pioneer plasma, the model before the new Kuro, and it still has fantastic picture quality. Any thought would be appreciated, Best Colin

Hi Colin,

Blu ray players also have up scaling 1080p for standard DVD, if your not in a hurry to get one, Toshiba is planning to launch a player that up scales standard DVD, to a claimed higher resolution than blu ray??? - a date has not been released yet !!! link:   http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/uan/2108

Hi Colin,

I bought the toshiba HDef DVD player thinking that people with minds on saving cash would go for this, rather than blu ray because of cost of player, but then play station kiled that, - there is one other player that is the same idea as toshibas new standard, this was reveiwed on this site this month, but cant find link, but player was around £1000, hope toshiba not expecting consumer to pay that sort of cash ???       Cheers .......Carl.

I heard that theToshiba HD players did a fantastic job of upscaling standard DVDs and I know that the current crop of Blueray players don't do such a good job with standard DVDs. Lets hope give Toshiba have had there fingers burnt with the demise of HD, that they come back to the market with a really compeditive product that temps consumers back to the brand.... ohterwise they will struggle to regain the confidence of cosumers out there. Time will tell but here's hoping!

Im certainly intruiged about that one. I would assume they will be using some sort of software that envariably tries to 'guess' what the pixels should be by taking into account more information than what is normally used (which is usually just the pixels next to one another)

Its just upscaling again but a better way of doing it obviously.

Hi Rik,

AVR, and myself have been awaiting the launch of the Toshiba xde 500 for some months now, Dave Oliver is hoping to get hold of one to test, this player has put me on hold before purchasing Blu ray ? got the tosh HD player and upscaled STD DVD is great, if this player outshines my tosh then its no contest for blu ray at thier prices on DVDs ? link for player is above.    ...Carl.

I have a PS3 blu ray player and can tell you that the properly encoded blu ray material does blow away 'normal' upscaled material so I sure hope they test this thing thoroughly!
