hi, new here and would like some advice please. i am busy replacing all my old sony gear to something more up to date . up to now i've got pioneers lx 5090 and b&w mt 30 speekers but cant decide on an amp! onkyo or pioneer (VSX-LX70 or TX-SR875 ) any suggestions ?

Hi Michael,

Both amps have good specs, and do virtually the same job, Decisions decisions ? check out reviews, price?, look up manuals on line ? some are harder to set up than others, onkyo i know is strait forward to set up. Good luck. .......Carl.

You can pickup the TX-SR875 for around £699 or cheaper at the moment.

Have a look at av-sales as silver is £599 -  a real bargain

The pioneer's are being replaced at the moment with a new range VSX-LX51/61/71/.

I would however suggest that you listen to a selection of amps at a local hifi store first with your speaker setup replicated where possible. Some will even let you take home an amp for a night trial in return for a swipe of your credit card. Each amp brand tends to have a slightly different sonic style and it is well worth the comparison and effort especially when spending a lot of your hard earned dosh.

Denon are also changing their range - new avr-2809 etc

Good luck

thanks for the advice , i've herd that the pioneer is more bass relient than the onkyo giving the onkyo a more rounded sound through small speekers like the b&w m1's that i have, anyone got any experiance of this ? (like my music aswell as movies) but the pioneer is defanately the better looking ,think i'l ask for a home demo though, thanks guys

Just so your aware, surround sound amps are not a PATCH on a decent 2 channel amp for playing music. So perhaps in the future you might consider using the av amp for surround sound processing and a 2 channel amp for the main speakers?

I have the Pioneer LX51 receiver & used with the Pioneer DV LX50 player ( great value only £279)  found  this to be an excellent combination especially for multi-channel SACD sound  DSD via 1.3 HDMI is the best sound I have head irrespective of price.  The video is also excellent . However I do use my own stereo amplifier for the front speakers and the Pioneer LX51 receiver just for centre & rear speakers.  I have heard that Onkyo although cheaper is very unreliable and my local shop  had to send back all their ONKYOS WHICH WERE FAULTY AND WILL NOT STOCK THEM AGAIN.   The Pioneer has  a much better build quality than ONKYO. My only gripe with the Pioneer  LX 51 is that despite being described by Pioneer as a High End product it has such  a  cheap & thin power cord which I changed for a heavier one. Suprisingly the much cheaper PIONEER DV LX50 player has  a temination that allows different power cords to be used. Finally a great annoyance with the DV LX 50 is that when not playing after 20 mins it switches itself off and this useless feature can not be overidden..

Hi Micheal,

If you looking at an AV amp you could also check out the latest Yamaha - I think they have a pure direct to bypass tone controls etc so its better for music - check out the latest reviews in what hifi online.

I have a Marantz they tend to be quite musical - often quite good for two chanel music as well. If you like the integrated amps for not much cost - the Rotels and Nads do quite well - often getting 5 star reviews.

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Michael, In my opinion Steve has not got a clue. Never ever believe any review just listen for yourself. The Pioneer has all the features of the Yamaha & more.  Marantz has been very backward with AV.

Hi Gerald,

I have been listening to hifi for many years (over 20 years) including AV equipment - and I do have a clue , you dont know me so you cant really say i dont have a clue.

I would always recommend try before you buy as well. I was just giving Micheal a few choices thats all.

Have a good day.

Steve.

hi, went in to my local hifi dealer at the weekend  and they keep changing their mind , one week it's onkyo next its acram now its yamaha, personly i've always like'd pioneer but they tell me that the others are much better ,i'm prepared to pay about £1000 and want the best sound/quality /performance aswell as being as up to date as possable, but definatly trying to listen to them all. think after this ill turn into a reviewer

Unfortunately the Pioneer LX51 does not give a full SACD performance according to the review in November Hi-Fi World as it converts internally DSD to PCM, Does anyone know of a receiver that supports DSD to Analogue  for multi-channel surround sound

Has anyone reviewed the new SC-LX71 or 81 yet?
