Review: Rega R1 loudspeaker
The entry-level model in Rega's R-series speaker range is a small wonder...

I have had some trouble with the driver of one speaker, when you say (recommended amp power anything from 30 to 500 watts depending on the quality.) what are we talking about, I blew mine with solid state Kenwood amp at about 70 watts (thats what the led showed) this is the second time 200.00 a pop to repair. What do I need to do to keep this from not happening again, I should say its starts clapping then before I can get to it speaker blown.

Hi Mark,

I'm slightly confused. Where did that 500W figure come from? The Review above claims 80W MAX(?) If this specification is true (and manufacturers are usually serious when they put a MAX figure on the spec) I wouldn't even approach 70W ?

Was the 70W "music power", RMS or Peak as this  might explain a few things....?

Granted a lower power amp being driven into saturation is more dangerous to your loudspeakers than a high powered one operating well within it's limits but if you did use a more powerful amp extreme care would be required ?

Kind regards,

Bill.

I see it now...the 500W is actually in the text in the Review....

That's quite an excessive margin....even a 50W amplifier is capable of producing ear-shattering sound levels with these so it is odd that they would encourage the typical user to risk overdriving them to that degree.

Such a high suggested power reserve is an unusual practice....given their efficiency and handling.

I doubt that you are the only customer who's suffering from this problem....

Kind regards...............Bill.

Try 200W/channel, like the 1997 Yamaha P1600, which can be found for cheap. This is an outstanding power amp that can drive good speakers to perform at their peaks. 70W/channel from a Kenwood is just not quality enough. You need more power and quality. Good luck. Brad
