VAN MORRISON

Inarticulate Speech of The Heart

It’s been 25 years since the great (Northern) Irish soulman released this 11 track set, a quarter of a century in which VM’s reputation has continued to grow – and this, at times, near ambient album is one of the reasons why.

Van The Man always said this particular title came from the Shavian saying: "that idea of communicating with as little articulation as possible, at the same time as being emotionally articulate". And while songs like ‘Higher Than The World’ and ‘Rave On, John Donne’ are strong in themselves it’s the instrumentals that set the mood – as sweet and as fathomless as an endless sunny afternoon.

This release has some sweet bonus tracks including a serene version of the title number. Inarticulate but expressive... and fellow Van-dals should also look out for the recent ‘Live In San Francisco’ re-issue which has a great take of ‘Shakin’ All Over/Gloria’.

7/10.

Carl, good to hear from you - I'm sure you'll find 'Inarticulate' interesting, at the very least. Ahead of its time in many ways - ditto 'Live In San Francisco' which is pretty damn funky at times as well as being both soulful and rock'n'roll, in the best sense of those words...

Hi Phil

Had trouble finding samples of this finial found this link.

http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/window/media/page/0,,134570-364016,00.html

From that I've heard..and they are only snippets...it's got something more original to it than the last Van Morrison Album Ilistened to.   That and his voice is gravellier.....I like this very much.

Hi Phil,

I couldn't resist going back for more!......

This CD has a more Celtic taste to the music..Starting with .Connswater

Celtic Swing is slow, relaxing and has a gentle lilting flute (I think).......like this

Rave on Jon Donne....Spoken intro: .I'd love to hear more of this John Donne was a Jacobean poet and preacher......It is a lovely pun on rave because he would probably been classed as a "Ranter or raver" for his preaching...

Inarticulate Speech of the Heart has a glokenspiel beat and a light harmony in the intro that conjures up.....ethereal images...

Irish Heart can just catch the lyric "Don't care nothing for your soul"...very earthy solid sound.. http://www.lyricsfreak.com/v/van+morrison/irish+heartbeat_20143083.html

The Street Only Knew Your Name. Heading.up tempo.

September Night: Slower, airy, and romantic.....

These observations were made on the intros.... Overall, I'd agree with you.   It seems a very relaxing CD...different probably in terms of musical arrangement than others I've heard. Certainly worth buying.

Tamara, hi - I thought you'd see it (well, hear it). And you're right - there is a bit of a lyrical 'Celtic' vibe to the thing, Van looking back to his gaelic roots at the same time as anticipating the ambient flavour of much music to come...

only thing of John Donne's I know is that great poet/stanza/whatever that starts 'No man is an island, entirely of himself' and ends 'so do not ask for whom the bell tolls, the bell tolls for thee.'

Good book/film too ('For Whom The Bell Tolls' I mean). And as I ranted before, the live in Frisco set is a great funky party of an album.
