Samsung F1080 into 1909 via qed hdmi.  Occasionally, dvds (eg live aid - reprocessed audio box set(2004), Rufus Wainwright "rufus, rufus ...does judy........", both dvd video) result in blank screen with "mode not supported " message. Amp set to "direct playback".

If the amp is powered off and switched back on - the dvds sometimes play.  If the source control is rotated, the dvds somtimes come on.  Same with rotating the sound options rotary control.  Although fiddling in this manner occassionally works, it is only occasionally.  Bypassing the 1909 - connecting the F1080 direct via HDMI into a new Samsung 40" LCD - all discs play.

Obviously, the F1080 is set to bitsteam - not much else to be pre-set on that player?

Very annoying on what is otherwise an extremely good value receiver.

Is it something I am missing in the set-up?

Hi, Mike,

This DVD player has a function called anynet, this sends a signal to switch on your tv via HDMI, see if this is on/off this signal may be affecting your amp, turn signal off in DVD player menu, hope this helps ...Carl.

Thanks Carl - makes sense, considering the number of things I've had to disable on my computer to prevent conflicts occuring.  I'll try it tonight.

Hi Carl

Disabling anynet made no difference.  Adding a dig coax connection between player and receiver produces sound, but still "mode not supported" is the HDMI message.  Ejecting the Wainright disc and loading a Harry Potter disc, without touching the amp, resulted in a the normal initial blank screen with the top corner HDMI text, followed by "mode not supported"!  Powering the system off and on restored normal operation with the Potter disc.

What I need to find out is:

Is this an expected HDMI occurrence with the occasional dvd, irrespective of receiver?

Is there a possible mismatch between the Denon AV1909 and the Samsung F1080 dvd player?

Is there a fault with the Samsung or the Denon?

Am I missing something staring me in the face?

If no one can shed any light, I'll have to approach the dealer to see if he'll set up a trial with another Denon, an alternative receiver, my Samsung and and a different player with HDMI output.

Hi Mike,  - missed this post !

The only other thing that comes to mind is the HDMI the denon takes the 1.3 version ? i would have a word with dealer to see if they can shed some light on this ? let us know the solution ? if you can,  sorry could not fix.  ...Carl.

Hi Carl

It seems the problem is with the Samsung F1080.  I took the player and receiver + dvd to Sevenoaks Sound and Vision.  The Samsung gave the same result when connected up to other receivers in the demo room. The "mode not supported " dvd was ok on other players.  So the end result is that the Samsung is relegated to the bedroom tv and a Panasonic BD30 is now part of the setup.

I suppose I should  find out if the F1080 is faulty or if its inability to deal with some dvds (not diff region) is a design problem.  However life is too short and I suppose it all comes down to "you get what you pay for", and in this case, it was a freebee with the 40" Samsung.

If anyone out there is interested, the Panasonic is everything the mag reviews wax lyrical on.  Worth every penny!

Cheers Mike,

Glad you got a result, and thanks for letting us know, wish you many ,many years of visual fun.   ..Carl.
