Hi, i don't have much of a clue about speaker cables. having just moved into our student house we have some speakers throughout the house and coming out of it at one of the walls there are four wires with 2 of them twisted together and fixed into one of the "mini-plugs" shown in the picture below.

What i'd like to know is, what use is this connector, and what do i need to connect speaker wires to say an ipod. do i even need this 'mini plug'? what connectors should i look to get?

any help would be great, many thanks.

Hi Jimmy,

Firstly to use your ipod for music to speakers you will need a suitable amp follow link :

http://www.richersounds.com/productlist.php?cda=productlist&sgroup=AMPLIFIERS

Then you will need to get a cable link from ipod to amp input link: http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-3.5MMATLA

You cannot link the ipod direct to full range speakers without an amp to boost the power to the speakers.

The four wires that you see coming out of wall connect to speaker output of an amp, eg two positive two negative, The pictured connector is just a block to connect two  cables together. hope you undersand this ....Carl.
