I have seen large plasma TVs (50") for under £800 (e.g. here: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LG-50PC55)

Are these and those like them good value, or do you really get what you pay for? I bought a cheap 32" LCD TV a couple of years ago and it was a complete POS, so was wondering if things have moved on.

Hi Steward,

Before parting with cash - has it got to be 50"? LG sets are ok - but for best value for money look at pioneer /panasonic for that price you can get 42" Hi def ready these have great picture /sound + freeveiw - go to shops and check set's out after all you will be watching screen for a long time to come - play with set's on display to find one you like.

Rather than go for a cheap plasma i would go for a mid priced tv. The cheap ones ive seen look cheap and ruin the idea of having a sleek posh looking television

Hmm thats true.  Though does anyone no anything about this competitions?  any winners?

well my sister has a cheapo lcd and she loves it - I did ask her why not go for a better make and her opinion is that for the extra she'd have had to pay it just wasn't worth it..... that being said I've looked at various TVs on display and there does seem to be quite a large difference (though could this be down to different pre-sets being used or TVs being set-up differently by shop staff?)

My telly has just decided to stop working it was a very cheap Ferguson old box type with a video and dvd player thrown in all for £200 The dvd and video player gave up on me last year and now the tv has lost the sound on it. Not a bad £200 spent though as they lasted a good 6-7 years. Soooo now i'm looking to replace my telly i'm wondering if a cheap flat screen will be ok too, if i get 6-7 years out of it i will be happy.

A cheap plasma just isn't worth it.   You should go for a decent Panasonic Viera, which you can get for about £700.

Cheap ones have all KINDS of problems. And especially the VERY big cheap ones (over 42")

Each ones different but just about EVERY tv has various problems. But the cheapie ones tend to have 'smearing' problems, bad pixellation problems, bad colour (that cant be calibrated) and 'screen judder'.

I recently bought a  Panasonic TH42PX80B, 42inch, £598 and it's amazing, highly recommended.

I bought it from Dixons (7th August, price may have changed since)  after searching all the comparison sites, I was very surprised to find them cheapest, even cheaper than Currys which is part of the same group.

Better to buy a good 42in than a poor 50inch, with £800 you've a lot of choice.

Hi Eric,

Good on you, i bought panny TH42 PX70 a year ago at the cost of £1100, did the stand come with price !!.    ...Carl.

No, but I bought one with the TV, (£45)  I wish I hadn't, the TV stands so high when it's on it I can't see out of the window, at  the moment the TV is on the floor, ( which I'm now used to), apart from not being able to see out I don't want the local scumbags to know I've got a very big telly, and I can't think of anywhere else to put it.

I'm getting a new stand made, just tall enough to accomodate my Humax and DVD recorder underneath.

Had the same problem only position in room for tv was corner by the window or on wall mid room - not an ideal viewing position ? i purchased a cabinet from argos around £50, 2ft high, now only 7" showing above window base, cant win can we ??   Cheers ...Carl.

Hi,

I agree with the fact that big cheap TV's are not the best ones. Better to go for a smaller one (37"-42") and invest the £800.

A Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80 for £600 or a Sony Bravia KDL-40W4000 for £750 are much more better than the big ceap one.

I bought a 32" Phillips ambilight about 3 years ago - awesome - just awesome - the changing light effects make for a whole new viewing experience

LoL Wish I had 800 to spend ! Can't agree more with what other posters have said, just get a good quality 42 inch or try to get a good guarentee for the cheapish 50 inch (in case something goes wrong).
