hi everyone

i've just bought my first hifi separates system, just an amp and speakers, cambridge audio and celestion. at the moment i'm just listening to music through my ipod dock but was considering buying a cd player as well. is this worth the money compared to using the ipod or am i wasting my time?

I haven't used my CD player for years - just use my iPod or my Mac these days.

No problems with the sound quality - though it does help if you understand a bit of the technical stuff when compressing your music in iTunes. The settings you choose can make a big difference to the audio quality.

Hi Ed,

I agree with Dave, a good quality CD player will beat the iPod but it does depend on the quality of the player and the associated amp and speakers as to the level of improvement.  That said, I also agree with Cliff that it is possible to get a good sound from an iPod or PC if the downloading bit rate is set as high as you can get it.  In the interest of getting lots of music onto their machine, many people go for a lower rate and the sound is then rubbbish if played through a system that's half decent.

The other issue is, do you have lots of CDs or are you going to start collecting?

Roger
