what do we think about the Panasonic TX37LZD80 LCD screen which is full HD and can be picked up for around £800?

Hi Alex

I've very recently seen the 37LZD80, and can confirm that it is a very good LCD screen. In fact, if you're really driven by the lure of full HD resolution, then it's probably a better option than any of the 37in LCDs in this group test.

I personally, though, would still favour Panasonic's 37PX80 plasma set, even though it's not full HD. The visible difference between a full HD TV showing an HD source and a 'mere' HD Ready TV showing an HD source is, in my opinion, quite slight on a screen as small as 37in. So I'd be more drawn towards other picture factors where Panasonic's plasmas fare extremely well, such as colour tone and, especially, black level response.

 Hope this helps.

Hi John,

That's very helpful thanks. I've actually taken the plunge and already bought the LCD. I am very pleased with it, especially the SD pictures, since I don't actually own an HD source yet. What swung it for me was that it would probably last a bit longer than the Plasma, and would eventually support full HD anyway, should I purchase a suitable source. The black levels are brilliant as well, but since I haven't directly compared it to the Plasma it's possible I just don't know any better.

Another question! Is it worth my purchasing some component RGB leads and using those instead of the scart, bearing in mind that all my sound runs through my Denon amp and speakers and not from the TV itself so I don't need to send that signal? Any recommendations welcome.

Cheers,

Alex

Glad you are enjoying the LCD. It is definitely one of the best 37in LCDs I've seen.

As for your other question, could you clarify for me what sources you're thinking of attaching via component?

 Thanks

I have a Pioneer DVD 575 - quite old but a best buy back in the day! lovely sound from it for CDs too.

Cheers, Alex

From what I remember of the DV-575, it can deliver a progressive scan output through its component video terminals. So you should definitely see a picture improvement - albeit a slight one - if you connect this deck to your new TV via the component terminals rather than the Scart.

Having bought a full HD TV, though, I really would urge you to get an HD disc player as soon as you can. The difference between proper HD and the progressive scan output you can get from your Pioneer will blow you away.

The PS3 is surprisingly good for its money - and remarkably fast in operation too! -  though if you wanted a high end performer with really high quality sound as well, you could spend a lot more on Panasonic's upcoming DMP-BD50 or the new Pioneer that's coming out soon.

 John
