May i ask your advice? basically i spent hours/days/months setting up my tv surround system etc. if i tell you what i have will you tell me i am doing me a disservice? What i haveanasonic TH42pv70 plasma tv (new full HD etc), Panasonic BD30 bluray player,Rotel rsp966 and rotel rmb1075 pre and power amps (not newest),Miller and kreisel xenon 5.1 speakers.my question is this: is this set up the best or should i drop the rotel amps and go direct bluray to speakers. will this degrade the sound coming out or not (- ie the power amp in the player needs to deal with more)? basically, when there is an explosion or something in a film, it seems to go very quiet rather than be explosive, losing the effects. not sure why?the reason i am asking is just if you know then i will make any chages but to change requires new speaker cable plugs to plug into the back of the bluray player. dont want to go to that expense if its not necessaryI look forward to your reply

Hi Philip,

Sorry did not reply earier but have only this second understood your msg ?

The reason you cannot get the explosion effects ?

1 your amp speaker settings in set up sound menu set to small, in this setting the lfe low freqencies would be directed to a subwoofer? have you got subwoofer ?

2 To get the low freqencies through your main speakers set the speakers to large in amp set up menu.

  Cheers, .........Carl

Carl,

is it better to keep the amps i have or go direct pluray player to speakers?

Hi Philip.

Blu ray players have not got built in amp, you have to play via surround amp to get full sound, to get the benefit of LFE, low effects you should idealy have a subwoofer,  hope this helps .....Carl.

Hi Philip

I have the same TV with an Onyko 656, suround bar by Polk, REL sub woofer, Bose aqumas rear speakers and after many threads/discussions with Carl, who advised me how to set up, and what connections I needed etc., I now have now a wonderful sounding system , however, my wife disagrees, mind you so does the dog when a real slam comes in via the sub??

 Carl, is the man!

All the very best - Paul

Hi Paul, All,

We aim to please, got man coming tomorrow to increase the width of door, cant get out ? LOL, thanks Paul your welcome, - you can adjust the subs, volume and LFE, =low frequency effects settings on the sound menu, if you think the sound is to high, sometimes if you play CD and adjust amps, sub volume to suit music this gives you a setting that goes well with both music and film track ? experiment differant positions in room for sub, you will be suprised, a corner will  give a deeper bass.  Cheers ....Carl.

Hey, Carl,

i been playing now and its been rocking. even dvds sound good on all the speakers and i was watching 28 weeks later and the sudden bangs required loo paper by my beer, and the sound is really crystal. i found out the other day that 'small' means for small speakers and large means for my crew - the xenons.

i even tweaked the sub and my feet vibrate when a plane takes off in (yes very tacky - but plane bits are good) Top Gun. and the Bourne series rocks when you are in the car chases and crashes cos the sound is at realistic volume. dam the sweat pours. all my dvds are in teh freezer cos i cant afford cryogenic freezing. im told it will improve it better still. the cables are next.

now i dont want to buy but will be happy to rent a sound pressure gauge. do you know where i can lend one?

AND.....i have my tv and hifi an separate spurs each from the dist board. do you knwo where i can buy high quality mains cable. russ andrews does but at £42/metre.

thanks Carl.

ps if you wnt you door widening i know a man.....lol

Hi Philip,

Freezing the discs, have tried this?, cant say if it works?, sounded the same to me?, but worth a try ???? i suppose???

Cables???? if you take a look around the cable threads you will find that this arouses a lot of debate, dont get lost in the thought that " if they are expensive they have got to be good" you'll find that statement, will cost you a lot of money for something that could do the same job for less cash. I have tried lots of speaker cables, and found subtle differences with them and not big outstanding differences ?, cables under £10 a metre, will do the job.

Mains cable ? try belkin mains conditioner with surge protection, this is cheaper than changing all the cables at £42/metre, works for me.

Interconnects the RCA plug on these are to be kept tight and clean.

One thing that i had a result with, that others may disagree on ??, ISOTEK rejuvenation disc, this i found on my system to give the system a right old kick up the arse, and this only cost £14.  Any way glad you solved your problem.   .......Carl.

Hi Philip,

Sound pressure metre. you can pick these up for less than a tenner? - Think of your neighbours when playing loud tracks there are laws on noise levels, and you could have your equipment taken off you by local council, if your neighbours complain ?? be a good neighbour not a nuisance, then have years of fun with your music and films.         ... Cheers ...Carl.

Carl,

dont worry about my noise levels, im ot a loud player. i like quality sound and good quality sounds really good at low volume. the balance is so i can hear all at low volume. there is a ouple next door with a baby, and with no agreement i make it a rule to lower the noise after 9pm, but i think its quite quiet anyway.

i can only find the pressure meters for £30+, but i will search.

re the cables.i have already upgraded all my cables but not OTT, cos im poor anyway which has kept me under control. but i agree, there is only some improevments, hence why i am aiming to clean the power supply.

th freezing?.....gotta have a go, eh?

cheers, phil
