allow me to introduce myself my name is damien henderson.I have recently purchased aPhillips 32 inch LCD which i paid 1300AU.It was purchased online through an auction apparently they retail for 3000-4000AU.It has high resolution 1366X768 and have been told these are a great quality LCD.Is the LCd a better choice over the Plasma and is there anything to be weary about the LCD?Thank you Damien HendersonAustralia

Hi Damien,
The choice between LCD and plasma has become much more tricky over the last year as both technologies have improved hugely. I don't know the particular model you've purchased, but I have every reason to think you'll be very happy with it.

WoW! I just have to update this thread to tell you folks how wonderful the LG42PC1D is with my new Playstation 3 as a source!
It's incredible!
SD content was impressive, but HD? I don't have the words to describe it!
Boy, am I glad I went plasma! :o)

I am suffering information overload.

We currently have an excellent Phillips 27" CRT and Goodmans Freeview recorder which apart from the occasional blipperforms very well apart from audio, it's footprint and the kids falling about laughing. So it is to be replaced but with what?

I had concluded that a wall mounted Panasonic TX-37LZD70 with Panasonic DMR-EX87Hard Disc recorder was the answer but Sony and possibly  Phillips are also contenders but who knows there may be others.

The substance of this cry for help is firstly, where can I compare sound quality,  secondly, do I really need 40" plus if I want to sit 10/12 feet away and thirdly where can I compare competing Hard disc Freeview recorders ?

Hi all,...

I know it has been a while since any postings here, but I need advice.  I want a tv, about 46 inch, my top budget is around the £1600 mark,....(less is nice,....more is possible if it is right to pay more).....I mostly watch tv recieved through my sky box, ocasionally dvd's,....and I would like to be future proofed for things like HD and anything else that you know about but that I don't!

My wife doesn't like shiny screens.

What should I go out and buy!

Thanks in advance.

Simon

The biggest problem I've found is actually being able to see the respective technology next to each other under decent conditions.

It seems easy to make a not so hot TV look much better by supplying a decent picture and a better one look the poor relation by a bad feed.

FWIW I opted for plasma as i it seemed to handle motion better on everything from standard TV to HD. It is difficult though to say which is better because it may dependant on what you watch the most (HD or SD). Some TV's which handle HD very well really seam to struggle with standard broadcast. Although something of a generalisation I think this is often where more expensive sets (pioneer/panasonic) hold their own i.e. the more expensive brands manage to still retain a good quality image on the lower resolution.

I guess this kind of reflects Mikes' orginal premise that we are forced to suffer a low quality high quantity service Ironically the cost is involved a an expensive TV is in making the crap look bearable rather than making the most of something which could/should be good

Thanks all for your very informed and interesting posts - I'm coming into some cash and need to reclaim back the four foot our current tv takes up in the lounge and have been on various sites looking at various tv's but had no idea about lcd v plasma..now however, I do have a better understanding.

Can you perhaps suggest shops NOT to buy from? We have got the usual close to where I live - Comet, Currys, Dixons and then, at a push, John Lewis.

I agree that CRT indeed leads the field with PQ but you try buy one in Australia -I could see it happening years ago - the whole country went plasma daft - it was exciting because ' you could hang it on the wall', yawwnnnn. No one seemed to concerned that the PQ was awful. Granted to the current generation are streets ahead of those early displays but still dont match CRT and from my own viewing comparisons, plasma is still ahead of LCD. I'm waiting for the new 50" Kuro's to hit Australia at which point my 36" CRT will go on to be a second-room set but if I had the choice to buy a CRT with less real estate, I'd take the option. As it stands, there are NO quality CRT's of any form available for sale in Australia any more.

I have been reading, with interest, all the comments on the picture quality of present day tv's.   However, no-one seems to mention sound which myself and husband need re-assurance on when considering a new telly!   At present we have an "old fashioned"  28" square Philips in a mahogony casing which matches our furniture perfectly!  (We are senior citizens!)   The sound is fantastic but whenever we look at replacing it we find that the sound on the modern tv's is absolutely apalling. They all seem to sound tinny and harsh! The picture is good on our old set too (about 14 yrs!)  although that is through cable - the aerial is no good where we live!   We bought a smaller flat screen for the bedroom, and the sound did not seem too bad in the showroom, but we do not like it in the bedroom!  We shall, no doubt, need to replace our "old faithful" before too long  and have been looking at the new models, very tentatively, but would like to hear someones views of the sound quality on some of the new ones on offer.  Over to you - with great expectations!

Two days since I posted this - does no-one want to help on sound?

Hi, I am in the market for a 50 + inch TV. I have noticed that most larger sets in the shops are now LCD rather than Plasma. Is there a reason for this ? Has the debate moved over to LCD as the prefered technology rather than plasma ?

Ive just read the guide which brought me here.

On the part about plasma 'screen burn' id like to just point out my particular case for anyone that may be interested.

I have a Pioneer PDP-427XD

Within a couple of months of me having it I accidentally burnt the screen in the top right hand corner by leaving it on a certain channel. I was gutted and thought id have to live with that as long as I have the tv.

Anyways. I have a PS3 connected via hdmi and decided to display a completely WHITE screen over a period of time (5 hours ish if I remember correctly)

The theory was the WHOLE screen would burn (bit of a gamble but I did it all the same)

Pretty much worked. It was still there afterwards but the effect was nowhere near as obvious. And now the burn cant be seen at all! The picture (if anything) looks even better and its calibrated perfectly. Upscaled dvds look awesome and blu rays look jaw dropping!

I would assume it would have got to this state over time anyways but im saying how MINE got to this stage so theres no confusion

Further to this I just thought I would point out that (particularly at the cheaper end of the market) most tvs do have inherant 'picture problems' dependant on the model. These range from 'smearing', to 'banding', to bad pixellation (bad processing) and screen 'flicker'.

Hi betty

Id suggest seeing what tv takes your fancy then checking out any reviews you can find on it. 'What hifi' love their SOUND from tvs for instance ~

http://whathifi.com/Reviews/Televisions-Reviews/Televisions-Reviews/

As it stands a cheapie tv isnt going to sound too good (generally speaking).

In my personal experience, the better sound quality ones tend to come from Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony and Philips

However, I REALLY recommend a decent proper surround setup. Or if you dont want speakers everywhere a good 'soundbar'

Heres a START price one ~
