I know this is a really old thread but I just had to say that the REAL Jazz FM is back but only on DAB ,sky and Internet.     See  JAZZ FM

 I have been out and bought a second hand Cambridge Audio Dab 300 just so I can listen to it again and I have to say it sounds very good indeed , I did not even bother to try DAB because of the bad press it got but I wish I had now, I suppose I am lucky that I live in a good reception area with a full strength signal and an error rate of between 0 to 4.

 I used to have a Naim Nat 02 and this little Dab tuner knocks the spots off it most of the time at a fraction of the cost, I have started listening to radio again because I actually enjoy it now !

Just got to this thread researching DAB radio.  BTW thanks for the TSF link - I agree, it's a great jazz show.

The original thread is relatively old and I wonder if any of you guys have changed your opinions on DAB vs FM radio?

I was thinking of getting a DAB set but now I'm not so sure.  My radio listening is  on FM radio via Sennheiser headphones + amp and I get a strong signal.

I was under the impression that DAB sound was supposed to be better but I gather it's not, or not necessarily ...

Any views since 2005?   Many thanks in advance  BTW, I'm in UK.

Hi Brian, in my limited experience DAB was never as good in sound quality terms as FM, but unfortunately in a few years time we will not have the choice which is a great pity as we will lose that better quality medium and then millions of perfectly good radios will end up in landfill.

But as always our non-elected government knows best and then sell off the freed up spectrum for shit loads of cash, of course does not enter into the equation.

Sorry if I sound a little bitter about this but to me the end of conventional broadcasting in AM and FM modes I think will be a nasty blow to many. Think of all the installed car radios and the many portables, not to mention all the best Hi Fi receivers that are in use now.

I mentioned AM there and maybe that was a mistake but in time the AM band will become a compressed digital system but maybe with improved sound quality.

However in terms of the many disturbing distortions that digital systems have I never found AM disturbing, OK no HF but easy on the ear all the same.

Thanks Electro for the same observation, what I fail to understand is why it is only on this thread that it happens on, sorry if I have deflected from the original subject.

On that I did find DAB radio rather disappointing in quality terms, quantity yes, displays yes but raw audio quality no...

I don't know the exact date of the FM cut-off time, but I think it will be a great shame for many, just imagine how many FM and AM radios are out there, in car systems, Hi Fi receivers, portables, even bathroom radios that could all become redundant in a few years time.

Unfortunately I think the same about digital TV, much as it looks good on first viewing it seems to lack much of the inner colour detail that we get from analogue.

Again many TVs and radios will end up in landfill.
