Hi all,
first posting - am looking to take the step up from mini system you buy in Boots to something more substantial.
To go in the kitchen, small unit, DAB rad, CD, plug to connect to ipod and not too expensive if poss.
Would I need to purchase separate speakers? If so, small would be perfect. What should I be looking for?
All help really appreciated.
Many thanks.

It very much depends on your budget. How much can you spend?
Also, generally seperate parts are best (speakers, CD, DAB), but if you're looking for something compact then you may be able to buy it all in.
Superfi were offering a good deal on the ONKYO all in one system (Open box sale)which has DAB and CD. This would be a low budget option (£170 and would need speakers on top)and probably better than what you'd have from Boots.

I believe it's got good reviews, although high end audiophiles may turn their noses up at the DAB, it should give you better reception than an average FM. As a start
Is this the sort of thing you were thinking of?

Patrick,
certainly is, many thanks.
What do I do with regards to speakers? Apart from small and compact that's all I know - there seems so many options.

As a suggestion about the £100 mark, you might consider the Wharfdale diamon 9.0 (I've go their bigger brother the 9.1) They've got good write ups and if their half as good, it would be worth it.
Otherwise, I know some new ones were well received on the last front cover of What HiFi. About the same price.
You'll need to spend money on the speaker wire, but that will be determined by how far away you want to set the speakers, or indeed if you try to wall mount them. (But that has it's own challenges.)
Failing that, you could look at Richer Sounds website for a bargain or even e-bay if you're happy to take a risk.

You're thinking of these which were the ones in What Hifi;

fellas,
sorry it's taken a while to get back... the Onkyo has been purchased and I now need to nail the speakers. I've had a look on the richer sounds site and it's throwing up lots of options - some from £9.99 with a £70.00 saving.
I presume the more I spend the better the quality. And advise on what they have on offer? Is a £70.00 too good to be true?
Again, all help really appreciated.
This link takes you there...

From what I read, speaker technology doesn't move quite so fast as other equipment. Using that as a start, these should be genuine bargains.
The only ones I've listened to were the JBL's in a kitchen. A friend thinks they're great little speakers, I didn't. Although i would defer to him on his judgement of hi-fi equipment generally.
I do trust Richer Sounds, so go in and speak to them. They may have something in store that isn't on the site and would fit with the Onkyo.
Good luck.
