I'm looking to buy my first surround sound system. Based on What Hi-Fi reviews it will be something like Denon DVD 1930, Sony STR-DA1200 and Sony 32v2000 TV. In the shop they told me that I cannot use just HDMI connection from DVD player to AV amp to get surround sound i.e. I would also need an co-ax or optical digital cable for sound. I thought that the HDMI should carry the 5.1 audio to the AV amp and therefore have simply one HDMI from DVD to AV amp and one HDMI from AV amp to TV - advice please

Also, If I had a PC with a digital videocard could I connect a DVI->HDMI lead from PC to AV amp to display PC vision through the AV amp also?? - leaving simply one HDMI cable from AV amp to TV

Thanks

Don't bother going to that shop again! HDMI carries all digital channels from source to amp providing they are both hdmi equipped.

Hi

I want to buy a Panasonic DVD/HDD with HDMI output.

If I connected to my Pioneer HD ready Plasma would it upscale terrestrial digital TV immediately or would I have to record the programme to HD or DVD first?

is hdmi cable connects better than coaxal and optical.  i have connected hdmi from cable box to amp and then to tv etc, using optical for sound, would sound be better using the hdmi for sound as well as for picture.
