TV SET-up

I have:
1) A Sony 32v2500 LCD TV;
2) a NTL Samsung SMT 2110c STB; and
3) a Panasonic DMRES30 DVD/VCR recorder.

All connections have to date been via good quality Scart. Picture quality from NTL was excellent, but picture quality from DVDs has been poor - out of focus with poor lip-sync and movement-smears.
DVD playback picture quality on my old Sony CRT, when connected by the same means, was excellent.

I was advised to try using component to link the DVD to the TV instead.

Therefore, my connections are now:

TV connected to DVD/VCR recorder by composite (and audio)

TV "AV1" socket connected to STB "TV" socket by Scart

STB "VCR" socket to DVD/VCR recorder "AV1 TV" socket by Scart

I have tried disconnecting either of the two Scarts (from TV to STB and from STB to DVD/VCR, because I thought I should do this, to force the signal from the DVD/VCR recorder to the TV via Composite - but each time I did this to either, I ended up with a black screen.

The composite MAY have improved the DVD playback, but I am uncertain.

Will the system automatically use the Composite link, even with both Scart links still in place? Or, am I doing something daft?

If it helps, the other settings I have used are as follows:

STB Settings:
"Scart AV Control": "ON"
"TV Screen": "16:9"
"TV Picture": "Composite (i.e. not RGB)"

DVD/VCR Settings:
16:9
"Progressive Scan": "On"
"AV1 Output": "Video with component"

TV Settings:
"TArget Input": "AV1"
"AV2 Input": "TV"

You say that you were advised to use component connections from dvd to tv, but you then say that you are using composite. This is the lowest quality tv signal, the highest being component/hdmi. Do you have a single video transfer cable (i.e. composite) from dvd to tv or three component cables? I suspect that actually av1 on your tv can be rgb enabled but not component enabled as it is a scart socket.

If the tv has av1 scart and av2 scart, the tv should automatically switch to display from either stb or dvd but if you have component input on the tv you would have to select that input manually. If you have three component cables connected to yout tv from the dvd are they in av3 and if so is this set to receive component?

You need to clear up some of the conusion here.

Very sorry. I meant that I had a component lead.

Thankyou for your patience and advise!
