Group test: HDD/DVD recorders
Get the best of both worlds with a DVD player that also has a built-in hard drive recorder. Who needs Sky +...?

Why when there is a Group Test Sony is no where to be seen??,

I own the RDR-HXD710 & yes i know i should have waited only another four weeks!! ;-| to get the same with HDMI even if at this time i am not into this type of display...........only due to the very weak HD Broadcast content & that i am running what i think can kill ANY HDTV dead with normal Digital Broadcasts a:CRT KV-32DX30U but thats another story!,

The RDR-HXD710 is a fantastic HDDDR in not only playback either from the Hard Drive or DVD but in build & looks, I understand this unit is old by todays standerds.........Blink & you might miss out on a better TV,AMP,DVD Player Ect.... which i my self have fallen foul to on numerous occasions,

Basically if any AV contest is to be done then the best in that field need to be included Shirley!,

Thanks

I've had the Panasonic for quite a while now, it's a fantastic machine and I could not live without it now. It is a bit lightweight but performance is superb. Get one in.

Hi Rob ;-),

Yeh! this is one brand i will look at when i think its the right time to upgrade to HDTV untill then my good old Sony CRT will do just fine!

PS....,

What would anybody say is the equivalent model to my KV-32DX30U in the new Sony HDTV range?,

Thanks ;-)

I've been waiting for Virgin Media (the old NTL) to bring out thier V+ box. It's finally arrived but a lot more expensive than they first stated.

I like the sound of the Panasonic, will this allow me to watch one channel and record another? I'm a cable customer and currently, since swapping to digital TV, I can only record the channel I'm watching. This is using a VHS tape video recorder.

As there's next to no HDTV broadcasts anyway it hardly seems worth the expense of V+ as it will only give me the recording options, just like the Panasonic!

Dave,
I too have V+,Phone & 2mg Broadband plus a slave box in my bedroom! all from Virgin Media for £45 pm!!,

Not bad if you ask me & yes i agree with the lack of HDTV at the moment even compared to Sky but with the low cost i think its a good deal..........& Big Man can't keep it like this for long or people including myself will simply jump ship back to Sky

Ps.... The V+ box is a doodle to use & has good playback from it's HD too!

Thanks for the response but what I was asking was if the Panasonic reviewed here would allow me to watch one channel and record another? (Without V+)

I would have also like to see the new Tosh you talk about in the NEWS section. From YOUR news section (http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/UAN/1047/v/2/?source=weeklyemail&attr=news1)

"The ...RD-97DT HDD/DVD recorder..include analogue and digital tuners, seven day EPG with view/record, digital text, favourite channel list and parental lock functions. Additional features include PAL Progressive scan, component video output and Timeslip recording. ...come with an HDMI output for upscaling DVD images to 720p, 1080i and 1080p, huge 250GB hard drive - allowing up to 424 hours of recording, as well as the ability to pause and rewind live TV and edit recorded broadcasts for archiving on DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW. It also features digital optical and coaxial outputs.

If it ain't got a dual tuner theres no chance :-(
The only option would be to use the TV's own tuner,

Sorry i can't of more help but as I've already said I own a Sony DVDRHDR" & NOT a Panasonic,

Thanks ;-).

Hi Swin70,

Sounds like a good piece of kit, 250GB & 1080P!,

STILL NOT A SONY THOUGH EH!" HA! HA! ;-)

Both pana and Pioneer have digital tuners; does anyone know if they are they DVB-T or DVB-C???

I know some Pioneer Plasma's have a DVB-T, but these are pretty useless here (Belgium) - unless you want to restrict recording to two channels instead of the 70+ that the cable offers :)

Hi Dave,

I've given this some thought &:
If you get Virgin or any TV Repair Shop to make you a coax up with a screw fix at one end & a male plug the other, you will still need a splitter box from Virgin! & take the new feed into your TV's areal point, This will only feed 1-5 though ;-(,

Hope this makes sence to ya &

Good luck!! ;-)

gmann, thanks for your thoughts, don't think I'll bother. Either have to stump up for the V+ box or be satified with watching/recording just the one channel!

Dave

Dave,

The V+ Box us FREE!!,

It's Sky's that's £300
Show/hide user stats
gmann, apart from the £75.00 installation fee, which personally I think is a joke as I have all their services, and the £15.00 per month which is £5.00 more than the intial advertising stated.

As I said earlier, HD is just not out there at the moment so that money would purely be for the ability to record one channel while watching another. I don't think that is worth it.

I did write to Virgin Media for their thoughts but they've been good enough to send me an automated response and nothing else. Customer satisfaction - low!
Show/hide user stats
Dave,
If you are already a virgin customer than there is NO charge for installation IF you keep the second box & use this as a slave unit elsewhere & pay £5 a month for this,

If you DO NOT keep the second box which is moved at NO cost then the charge of £75.00 is payable,

With the £10 a month for the V+ & HD & £5 for the slave the Total increase will be £15

In my opinion "V+ or Sky-HD turn TV into a much better/more user based system & all that cost something" & to me it's NOT OTT,

& then there's the HD when it arrives! which IS bad at the moment i admit but can only improve in time.

Ps............
Two days ago my bill arrived wrong!,

!)On phoneing Virgin FREE 150 Number

2)Showed them there mistake in my Bill

3)My Bill was rejuiced there & then

4)Came off phone happy"

5)All Good!

Hi all ;-),

I have decided to finally go HD but can anyone out there give there thoughts on NOT spending around £1800 on a 42/50" Sony LCD or a pioneer/Panasonic plasma but spend a little more on a HD Projector to take over my TV viewing ie: full replacement of a HDTV,

I will have a through of 13 feet & will be sat against the rear wall under the unit so not only will it need to perform well but must be as silent as possible,

Looking forward to your comments ;-)

Hi all ;-),

Does any body know if the new BBC Freesat Service will broadcast in HD
Show/hide user stats
Hi all,

I've been doing a fair amount of research into the world HD now that i've bought myself a full HD Sony Bravia. Is it me or is there a huge amount of companies/store staff being, shall we say, economical with the truth on weather it's really worth buying any of these HD players be it Blu-ray or HD/DVD? As far as i can can see the technology is updating at such a speed that it's pointless buying anything for at least another 6mths to a year. The PS3 was looking like the most tempting offer (simply because of price and that none of the competition players out perform it) until i was directed to this site by a friend and read the comparison article on upscaling HDD/DVD players. For me this is looking like it could be the way to go for the time being but it would have been good if they had included a sony in that review as their player recieved quite a few awards from various press....
