According to an article printed today in the Guardian newspaper, sales of 7" vinyl singles are up in the first half of this year by 13%. This is at a time when CD single sales are sliding and surprisingly, a large proportion of the consumers are young teenagers and students. Personally I'm not at all surprised. Ever since I switched my Rega Planar 3 for a Cambridge CD player some 20 years ago, I just can't seem to get as excited about the sound quality. It's as though something somehow is missing. I recently got hold of an ageing Dual 505 turntable and plugged into my Linn amps. There, in the grooves of my old albums was that magic sound. Does anyone out there have issues with CD sound or is it just me?

Hi Lee, I use both cd & vinyl, when cd players first arrived they was frankly awful compared to vinyl, but i think this had alot to do with the systems they were slotted into being optimised for the tonal balance of analogue sources, as time went by things improved but alot of people are still not impressed by cd.
I personally like both but in different ways, i have a large collection of cd's & lp's, to sumarise 90% of my cd's sound very good to excellent, 10% sound awful.
With lp's 90% sound awfull 10% sound excellent ( slightly better than cd ) but this is purely down to the quality of the discs & recordings not the players.
So cd gives me access to more good quality music , but vinyl sometimes gives me the ultimate quality.
I think cd sales are sliding not because of increased vinyl sales but the massive increase in music dowloads & music sharing of dubious quality, which is mostly free , the kids dont care about sound quality as long as its bangin!
