Are there any real benefits to Bi-amping?

I've a ROKSAN Kandy CD and Amp and there is a power amp in the range that can be used for Bi-amping and I wondered if there were any advantages with this approach.

True bi-amping (tri-amping even) is very worthwhile because it's far easier to design good active crossover networks that operate at pre-amp levels (a volt or two) than it is to build a conventional passive crossover placed in the output of a power amplifier. However, it is highly desirable that the active crossover and loudspeaker system be designed by the same company as they must work together intimately. Clearly the two amplifiers must have correct gain or the delicate balance between the drive units will be wrong.

In the professional world where this approach is the norm, it is common for the loudspeaker maker to supply the active crossover, power amps and loudspeaker as a complete and integrated system. Sometimes the electronics are built into the speaker cabinet, creating a compact and convenient unit.

Please do not confuse this approach with anything related to bi-wiring which, in my view, is a farce. There is also a strange variation on the bi-wiring theme which involves the use of separate power amplifiers (as above) but a standard high level crossover in the loudspeaker. This is an even bigger farce because it involves most of the expense (extra power amps) but none of the advantages of true bi-amping which, as I stated earlier, relate largely to a high quality crossover constructed with active filters.

Thanks Pluto,

I've run off a copy of the article, looks like I'll be making a trip to my local hifi dealer soon.

Ive been bi-amping for over twenty years now, when i originally bought my Krell KA100M mono-bloc power amps, i did listen to the stereo version the Krell KA100S but it seemed to be lacking the bite, the control ,of the mono-blocs. Why not get your local dealer to do an A/B comparison of the equipent you fancy............good luck .........Dave Mellor

Thanks Dave,

Funnily enough I did have a bi-amped set up a few years ago when I ran an ARCAM 7 integated with an 8P.  This drove TDL speakers and seemed to work very well but this set up got left behind following one of those relationship breakdowns and I hung onto my little AURA amp because the phono input was better quality (I believed, sounded better to me anyway!).  Having rebuilt the system around ROKSAN Kandy kit driving Quad 21Ls I've been happy with the sound generally but do feel sometimes that sound needs a bit more of the bass sound that the TDL/ARCM set up used to provide.  Perhaps a "warmth" that I don't get with the Quads, although there is no doubting the greater level of detail.

The Kandy power amp has been well reviewed and Pluto's advice was veri illuminating because I was wondering whether bi-amping was a bit like bi-wiring and that the benefits were somewhat exaggerated but I can see the science behind bi-amping as the crossover problem is addressed by this route.

I'm going to get the Kandy when I can get the right deal and at some point down the line (and when I've got a lot more money to spend that what I spent on the Quads which were excellent value) I'd like to upgarde the speakers.  I'm attracted to the PMC range because of their transmission line design that the TDLs used although I haven't seen these reviewed on AVReview pages as yet.  Alternatively, I see quite a few people rave about the Proacs so we'll see - that's some way off anyway.

Of course, with the power amp there'll be interconnects to consider but that's a different and much more controversial thread!  A friend gave me my current Nordost leads but I think I'll go for something a little more cost effective if I'm the one paying!

When I do get the Kandy power amp I'll be sure to post  a review on the AVR site when I've devoted some quality listening time!

Thanks again for the advice Dave & Pluto, cheers.

Hi Rodger. you want a warmer sound with your Roksan equipent. I use an ageing Roksan DP1  CD transport with my Futtermann valve D.A.C and the sound is absolutley stunning, [although according to some putting a valve in the chain is wrong] maybe you should try to get an off board D.A.C unit, or at least give one a try.I dont know if D.A.C,s are still available, but if you come across one try it...........Dave

Dear Pluto and Dave,

Thanks for your advice, I've finally got round to purchasing the Kandy Power amp (using some Christmas money - that's my excuse anyway!) and I'm now bi-amping my Quad 21Ls.  What a difference?!

There so much more detail, presence and weight of sound, it's really made the sort of improvements I was looking for so I reckon the money was very well spent.

Digging out lots of favourite CDs to listen to now - brilliant.
