Hi everybody

ve joined today so I'm not sure where should put my message . I have place one at the begining of the forum which read ---

I'm a pensioner and I don't know anything about t.v. but I'm wanting to buy a good one for about £1000 .

I have a small room so am looking for a 32"  H.D. Freeview LCD.  I am getting myself into a bit of a dither as there are so many to pick from ?

Can anyone help me in finding the best make for this price, I'm thinking of Sony. Toshiba . but really any well know manafacture as long as they have a good reputation

P.S. by the way what is HDMI

                             -------------------------------------

My other question I would like you to answer is which would  you recommend LCD to  Plasma    PLUS what is the smallest plasma screen  you can by ?    I've also been looking at your reviews and I am swaying towards  the  Panasonic TH-37PX70 . I know the screen is larger but thats OK

An HDMI cable is a cable that you can use to link your DVD player to your screen.

It's a very good way of doing it because it's a single cable that will carry both sound and vision, it's unobtrusive and because the signal remains digital until the last moment, it has the potential to be of high quality.

If the specification says HDMI, it means it has an HDMI socket.

Sometimes it can be marginally better to connect with other types of cable dependent on your television, DVD player, amplifier (if you have one) and the cables available but the difference may be marginal and HDMI beats everything for convenience.

Can't help you re; advising you which telly to buy I'm afraid.

37" is the smallest plasma i know of, the panasonic is a very good tv and easy to use, put your wires in the back of the tv then plug it in for the first time switch it on and it dose the rest it even puts the chanel in the right place eg BBC1 in prog 1 BBC2 in prog 2 and so on, as for the lcd / plasma question this is something that has been debated for a long time and people just cant agree, personaly i follow panasonics line of thought they are both good, lcd is better smaller than 37" and plasma is better 37" and above.

hope this helps and i belive you can get 37" panasonic for under £1000, which is brilliant just wish i had waited to get mine

Thankyou Christopher and Spud

You have made my choice a little bit easier to make .

I will start by going into a couple of shops  to have a look at the tele and to check out their prices  then I'll try to find somewhere to look on the internet to compare the price. By the way will I still be covered for a year if anything goes wrong with the tele if I buy from the internet , and if so how easy is it to get it replaced if something goes wrong?.

MAY BE it might be safer for me to buy from a shop as it will be easier for me to take back ? ( any suggestion's)

Keep well Sue

Had you thought of John Lewis? They're not the cheapest but they do a 5 year guarantee as standard & I've found them good in terms of customer service.

People used to rent things like this because of the risk of them going wrong 18 months after you'd bought them. Maybe it's time for that business model to return.

At one stage, one of the hire companies did a television with a coin slot & you had to feed it with 50 pence pieces if you wanted to watch - seriously!  Presumably they had to send someone round from time to time to empty the television.
