fuse protection for mission 782 SE

I would like to install an in line fuse to protect my mission 782 SE speakers from burning up due to the occasional heavy hand on the volume of the amp (normally do not pass 12 O'clock).  I have a Rotel RC 1070 pre amp with the matching RB 1070 amp with a rated power of 130 W/ch into 8 ohms.  This is within the mission recommended 50-200 W/ch.  Two questions are what value of the fuse? and where to put it (speaker wire input or somewhere inside where the crossover sends signals out to the speakers)?  It has been only the mid range speaker that has failed in the past.  Mission have been unable to help with this (although friendly etc.).  Thanks very much for any help.  Burton

I have to say that I would recommend against this.  Adding things to the signal path may degrade the sound slightly.

If I were in your position, I'd be looking at a speaker upgrade to cope with your volume requirements.  Perhaps to something built to studio grade or PA tolerances.

Thank you Christopher,

I thought about changing speakers but we live in a small town in France and the nearest audio shop is hundreds of KM away.  I bought these Missions on the Internet from the UK and some good friends found space in their car to bring them out.   They take up, in the box, about the same room as a person.

If I was in the UK I would probably go and do a swap but here is not the same kind of situation.

The other thing about me is that  I used to work for R&R bands as a roady (long time ago).  I have listened to some famous bands from a distance of 10cm from their Marshall speakers and as a consequence have a pretty limited capacity as far as ears go.  I can hear good clean sound, however.

I don't think I could discern a small drop off in quality with an in line fuse in place.  The trade off is the loss of music due to a moment of irresponsibility on the night and the weeks following without any music at all waiting for new speakers and also the cost and inconvenience.

These 782's are pretty sweet, by the way, and the people on the end of the phone at Mission have tried to help and are always friendly.

So, any ideas regards fuse protection?

Kind Regards, Burton

No ideas about fuse protection - sorry.

I'd be very surprised if someone like Turnkey or Dolphin wouldn't ship a pair of studio speakers out to you.

Hi,

Missions 782se had a few probs with their midrange units and have replaced them now which you can get from Mission. Most amps these days peak at about the 12oclock position when you go past this position they can clip which is proberly the route cause of your problem so this would beat any fuse for a split second if you fitted them. I had a pair of Griffin speakers in the 70's and they were fitted with fuses at the factory but it didn't cure the blown units !!.

Hope this has shed some light on this.

Keith
