Apparently the only thing that makes a good console are the three categories listed above. What he forgot to mention is how crappy PS3 games are (Lair, F.E.A.R., etc . . ) and how good Xbox games are. This guy present any facts with his "PS3 looked better" jive, or does him saying it just make it true?
And why Michael, if you're reviewing for the purposes of "Home Cinema" did you not include the Xbox HD DVD player add on in your review? Why did you not include any discussion of the free TV show downloads on the XBox live marketplace, and movie rental downloads available to Xbox live subscribers?
Why ignore those very valuable selling points Michael? . . . oh right . . because it's damning to your final conclusion. Got ya. How much Sony paying you?
Just to start, I do not own either of these consoles.
Apparently the price comparison was across the 2 consoles out of the box. He didn't do the review on the Xbox360 HD drive because OH, it doesn't come with it. You have to buy that!
And free TV show downloads? Well reading the news, those are going away. TV corporations want their money and so is ready to charge .50 to $1.99 premiums per show.
And to your final comment Mr Simons, Crappy games? I'm sorry but Sony doesn't control that. A coding house makes the game, asks Sony if they can purchase the rights to release the game on their consoles. Then out if goes.
Trying doing a little more research instead of jumping to conclusions
360 is better due too games and hard drive it is double ps3 60gb hard drive with 360's 120gb,the noise may be quite loud from the 360 but when you get into the game you dont notice it,and i would never pay £425 for any console you can get a core console for £200 now thats less than half of the ps3.Also ps3 online sucks, xbox live is worth all the £40,much better than sony's free crap they call online gaming.360 has gears of war, halo 3.etc.ps3 has fear, and that crap racing game i dunno what its called.
Not once did I jump to any conclusion - I simply restated his facts, and questioned his opinions. Why, if the Xbox is louder than the PS3 - why doesn't he include some imperical evidence? DB are easy to measure, a reading such as "Xbox came in at 20 DB, PS3 came in at 15DB" would be a strong argument -- whereas "The Xbox was the noise culprit" is just a bunch of Fanbois BS.
As for the HD add-on for the Xbox that you "have to buy" - even after buying it, you're still at a lower price than the PS3, and you get all the cables to hook everything up - as opposed to having to pay $60 for the PS3 HDMI cable. Oh - you get a movie with it too . . . 5. Also Roy - since one of the three items reviewed in this "review" - although it was actually just an advertisement for Sony - was the BD drive, it is only logical (forget fair), it is only logical to include the HD DVD add-on, and cost it would add to the Xbox. Instead, he acted as if the Xbox doesn't even have HD DVD capability. The option to add it on, is so much better than having it crammed down your throat by the manufacturer, so that Sony can win the next format war.
Guy who said "HD DVD is losing big time" - HD DVD is not losing to Blu-ray - although I don't think your IQ is high enough to have an intelligent conversation - but HD DVD standalone players are outselling Blu-ray 3 to 1, that is VERY BAD NEWS for Sony and their Blu-ray purchase of the HD movie market. Come Christmas, HD DVD will overtake overall sales of Blu-ray DVDs, I'll put $100 on it.
This is ridiculus.. The author hasn't even got his facts right. The "Oveview" box for Xbox 360 lists the specs for the old Xbox, not the Xbox 360!
And how about taking into account Content in your evaluation? Xbox 360 has the most games, the best games and the best online service and it's cheaper. The PS3 cannot compete when it comes to content!
If you want a nice ornament in your living room, buy a PS3. If you want to actually play games, buy Xbox 360.
I think people make a good point, xbox does have more high quality games at the moment. But personally, I feel that I got my moneys worth with the playstation 3, and I understand why this guy chose it as the higher quality console. I feel better buying a machine that has less than a 1% failure rate (unlike the 33% failure rate for xbox 360's). I dont have 8 hours a day to play games like some younger gamers do, so I am fine with the lower selection of games (for the time being). After all, the ps3 has Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter, Oblivion, and Resistance. And soon it will have MGS4, GT5, Uncharted, and Ratchet and Clank. If you like shooters buy an xbox 360, if you like adventure, racing and rpg's buy a ps3.
It's clear you don't have a PS3 to compare it to X360, while X360 have more games than PS3 that just don't means the console is better, everyone knows it's not, the fault rate of X360 is about 33%, PS3 is less than 1%, X360 is a BAD product, 33% is just pathetic, not even cheap chinese products have such fault rate percentage, that's hard to admit for fanboys like you, but the truth is that X360 is crap in terms of hardware, the single thing it has of next-gen is a graphics card, the rest is bad plastic and bad components.
This article while prooves how good a PS3 is in terms of hardware, shows at the same time how bad hardware a X360 has in it. Again, we are not talking about games, but quality of hardware, and there my friend... PS3 is the total winner.
And while the problem of PS is easely solved (bring more games to it), the problem of M$ is more complicated, they have to launch new SKUs each six months because their console is becoming obsolete top fast, they launched Elite and it has not even HDMI 1.3... why? because 1.2 is cheaper, everything in Xbox360 is cheap, motherboard, CPUs, plastics, all cheap crap.
Xbox core + HDD + WiFi + HD-DVD is definitely more expensive than a 60GB PS3 - I should know, I have both. And since you're with the logic of getting the same accessories/features for both (Blu-ray = HD-DVD add-on), you don't have to pay $60 for the HDMI cable since you can always get components cable for $20 - which is what the Xbox 360 comes with.
Don't get me wrong - as of now, the Xbox 360 is much better for gaming (I especially love the online play) - but as an overall AV equipment (hence the name AVreview.co.uk..?), the PS3 is definitely superior. As for the TV shows, the reviewer is from UK - did you even stop and think for a minute that maybe - just maybe, they don't have those in UK? This "review" is for UK consumers after all. I'm not even gonna talk about failure rates since my Xbox 360 hasn't crapped out on me yet.
And for insulting the other guy, your IQ is definitely stone-age low if you really think HD-DVD is winning - it's been 2:1 in Blu-ray's favor all year long. Come holiday season, I think best case scenario would be 1:1. Oh yeah, don't you think it's kinda funny how when it comes to player sales, the PS3 is excluded while when it comes to attachment rates, the PS3 counts? Talk about IQ..
More, the HD-DVD is not as easily upgradable as the PS3 firmware, PS3 and Bluray are one, HD-DVD and Xbox360 are two distinct things, while Bluray in PS3 is getting better and better HD-DVD in Xbox360 is getting older and older, and if X360 makes lots of noise alone... now imagine with another fan atached to it....
I agree PS3 is an expensive hardware, and that in this moment there isn't many games "system sellers", but X360 passed by the exact same situation, so this is a natural thing, big games for PS3 will arrive soon (Little Big Planet, MGS4, FFXIII, KillzoneII, Drake's Fortune, Ratched, Heavenly Sword, GTAIV, Assasin's Creed, COD4, Burnout, etc...)... so, good games won't be the problem for PS3, that allied to a good harware is the key to succed in this business, no pay for online like X360 is another advantage, Home is just weeks away....
Conclusion: PS3 is with no question the best hardware available in the video-game world, the article above just proves that very well, Xbox360 is with no question the console with more and better games for now, Wii is the best investment for fun... but X360 with is crap hardware, terrible sales in Japan and lack of true next-gen features won't stay on top for much longer, after HALO3 Xbox360 will fall very fast.... Wii will sell many more millions, but hardcore gamers will want more, even the casual gamers 2 years wii owners will want more... in that time they will choose PS3 that will be cheaper than it is now, will have the best franchises, will be the only true HD gaming machine and will be the console to last more 6 to 8 years... by then all X360 will have died with the RROD or other problems caused by a bad quality hardware component.
I love how when a xbox fan says we got etc etc and halo 3.. which isnt out yet.. but then fails to mention any games that the ps3 WILL have soon also.
Also you can measure DB ratings sure. But while its a good arguement how many people actually know what lvl 20db is for example? or how much different 20 is from 30? really honestly who does?
And yes he didnt even bring up the reliability of both systems. Also why would you want to include the HD dvd drive option. If you happen to read elsewhere thats probably the worst option for HD viewing possible. It would only make the rating worse for your 360 when compared to the ps3.
And finally. Why the hell would anyone even bring up games on this review when the author clearly stated that his review is not based on games. I guess most of you cannot read or just read the conclusion and get all bent out of shape.
And agreed with david hayter. Gears of war.. bioshock.. halo 3.. all fps.
Sorry but FPS's are better on the PC and if you can pull your head out from that hole to admit that you'd realize theres nothing else out for the 360 other than the fun game of shipping ur broken unit back to MS and waiting weeks for another. Variety is what made the ps2 extremely popular and it will do the same for the ps3.
Btw it will be funny to see what the 360 fans say in a year or farther.
Typical 360 fanboys crying again they realy are the dumbest gamers i've ever seen this is an audio & video review site where does it mention game reviews on this forum?
yeah - you people are hopeless. 277K Xboxes sold last month - (up 61%), 131K PS3s (down 19%) . . .
your console sucks (Lair), and it's not worth my time trying to convince you.
Xbox failure rate issue? I'll take a 33% failure rate, with a 3 year warranty, over a 1% failure rate with a 90 DAY warranty, any day of the week.
Sony Fanbois are the stupid. Keep waiting for your games fellas - GTA4 . . oops!
Did a Sony guy just make fun of MS for new Skus every other month??? can we say 4 different types of PS3s in two months? 80GB, 60GB, 40GB, Core *(oops, core sales were even less than 60gb (yeah, hard to believe that's even mathematically possible)), so I guess only 3 different types. Hey! Xbox has 3 different types and has never discontinued a version of Xbox . . . wow Sony sucks.
See you guys are in trouble because those sales figures I quote above . . yeah . . game makers pay attention to that. No console base = no good games (other than Xbox 360 ports). So you guys are all on the losing side of this console / DVD format war. Betamax vs 2 for Sony - I don't hear any takers on my $100 bet. Losers.
I really think all you M$ Fanboys need to sue Microsoft because their cheatin the hell outa you. Think about the xbox 1. After 360 came out M$ just left xbox in the dust. No support, games, or continued production. The same thing is gonna happen with 360, M$ is just gonna one day magically cut off xbox live and 360 prouduction to announce the new xbox and all its add ons which all u stupid peopple will buy up agin. This is the reason i bought ps3. free online which owns, Just as good games, And when i want to play i dont have to worrry about the ps3 not working and just failing. wow lol you people need to get ps3 at least mine has worked since launch day. Too bad my friends on his 3rd CRAPBOX !!!
No mention of online play or game content? Biggest issue with the PS3 right now is the lack of games. The only way that you'll see much difference between the two systems is if developers ever max out the capabilities of either one. Or if one has more exclusive titles. Right now neither are maxed out and xbox is winning the exclusive title fight (Halo 3, Forza 2, Bioshock and Mass Effect anyone?). I haven't tried Lair for PS3 yet so it may be able to compete.
Also, what version of the 360 was used for the comparison? The one with HDMI or the old one? If the audio for PS3 was run through HDMI and the 360 audio through composite I'd expect there would be a difference in audio quality due to the D/A conversion in the 360. If both were run through HDMI or both through composite it would be a difference in the conversion that the systems perform. If you're making one of them do an extra conversion, it's not exactly a direct comparison. For a really good converter you'd pay more that both these systems are worth so expecting one to be able to do a conversion that the other isn't required to doesn't make much sense. They may have both been tested with the same output so that comment may not apply. Apparently the 360 only ships with HDMI 1.2 and PS3 with 1.3 but that should only be noticable on some sound sources, not likely a standard CD.
If I was really looking for a CD player, or a video player, then yes, PS3 would be my obvious choice... thanks for another fanboy article disguised as an objective perspective.
I understand this is an AV site and don't question the result given that the PS3 has a Blu-ray drive but what I do question is the point of a comparison between an expensive movie player\games machine and an affordable and first and foremost games console.
Given the nature of this sites priorities and the factors used in judging the two machines there was only ever going to be one winner and therefore this has proved to be a pointless exercise, a more logical comparison for an AV site that that's not going to take into account the game playing qualities of a machine would be PS3 vs a stand alone Blu-ra or HD DVD player.
Aside from hardcore fanboys with a predetermination to buy a particular brand it's obvious that videophiles to whom gaming is not a priority are going to buy the PS3 for it's Blu-ray, while hardcore gamers to whom HD disc format playing is not a priority are more likely to buy the cheaper machine with the better games library, so what exactly was the point of this head to head?
