Thinking about getting a freeview box, but i've got one quick question - does anyone know if freeview has the ability to broadcast in high defintion?

According to www.dtg.org.uk Sky seem to be leading the HDTV revolution in the UK, with equipment being provided by Thomson and Sony. It appears they plan to replace Sky+ with the new service. As freeview is part operated by B-Sky-B, i'd imagine it will be a little while before they start to 'give away' HTDV broadcasts.

Next year at the VERY earliest I reckon...

Will, as you're in the market for a new freeview box you might be interested in the Philips DTR1500. I'm currently waiting for it to be delivered so I'll let you know how I get on, but it did get really favourable reviews - I think Stuff mag gave it 5 stars (or was it T3, can't remember!) Anyway, looks like a good little unit - have a look on ebay...

I wouldn't worry too much about HD compitbilty with a freeview box. Sky plan a 'soft' launch for HD and thats not for some time yet, at least a year. But you won't have even have sky anyway because you'll just have the freeview channels which won't be broadcast in HD for years.

The point is a freeview box is about £50 so if it's not future compitble then I wouldn't worry too much! Be more concerned with buying a HD compitable tv for £££££'s!

Brucie is right! The high definition sets contain far more complicated devices for receiving and converting the HD signal. I really doubt that a freeview box would have the same technology included. In the AV market, its the general consensus that HDtv has quite a way to go before it gets anywhere near our shores... far longer before it becomes affordable to the Average Joe.
Here's to waiting.

Cheers for the advice guys. I guessed that it wasn't something that's imminently gonna happen. I'll just get myself a box to tie me over till I can afford Sky :)
