IMO Sennheiser headphones are THE only headphones,all others pale into insignificance,ok its a personal thing,but believe me,i,ve tried most of the big brands,Beyer,AKG, Grado etc and i,ve always come back to the Senn,guess ive started an argument now,but what the hell
No arguments from me. They haven't let me down so far. In fact with the weather improving I can start running home from work again, which is a good excuse to get a new set of headphones for the ipod.
I've had mine for over a year now and they're certainly one of the best ones that I've used. Next pair will probably be another Sennheiser given how long these lasted.
Well, I have a pair of HD580's which I considered better than anything else apart from the 600/650's which I listened to and was VERY impressed - at least for the top end(but not to buy..). But I've found the 580's equal(by a whisker!) in a modest set of Koss Porta-Pros: at a 7th of the price! For top of the line I think the AKG 601/701's are better in terms of sheer punch and dynamics when you turn up the wick, and at least equal at more modest volumes with a less "dark" spectral balance; or is it the other way round! Rather like the difference between A MM and MC phono cartridge(pick-up to us Limeys!).But the HD580/600/650's are much more comfortable for prolonged listening, and I mean listen....
I tend to agree I've always been impressed with the quality of Senheisers over the years, but I listen via Elsctrostics speakers now and and use phones for recording for which I use Beyer closed DT150work and recently bought some Grados SR80s to help with mixing, they sound detailed, spacious if a tad edgy and slightly lacking in bass, but they are very uncomfortable......

For me, the HD25s are an unbeatable set of DJ/studio headphones... After 4 years (and I've been wearning them on the way to work every day for a year now) they're still going strong. (Although the covering over the ear cups has come off now... but that's all!)
i have owned the Sensi 600 and now the 650 which are even better and if you have the ability and equipment to play them with, i hardly think them with a whrill if looking for a new set of cans
Hello David,i,ve got the 620 pro 64ohm, and the 580 open back,i,ve had the 580s for about 8 years and have always been delighted with them,i,ve also got a pair of the precision range which have been commandeered by the wife,and if memory serves me correctly,ive got a pair of Beyers and a pair of Grado,s in the loft,think i won the Grado,s in a What-Hi-Fi competition some years ago but have never used them.What do you mean by " if i have the ability and equipment to play them on"what ability are you referring to,and as far as i recall,you only need a quarter inch jack,and my Krell KAV250P has one..............Dave
I bought my Sennheiser HD414s in 1970. They are in daily use and still deliver the goods better than any others I have tried. They are 2000 ohms impedance, and can be connected across speaker terminals if your amplifier have headphone sockets. The frequency response is better than 20-20,000 hertz, plus or minus under 2dB. I paid £12.00 for them 38 years ago, not bad eh!
Hi Neil,were the HD414s the headphones with orange ear pads?,you,ve had your phones for 38 years,not a bad investment eh,i once "strayed" away from Senn,and bought those Beyers which now reside in the loft,thats how good they were,i did win a pair of Grado,s but i,d auditioned them at Richer Sounds or Super-Fi,i cant recall which, and found them a bit tinnie,so now i just stick to the good old Senn,s...............Take Care .............Dave
Hi David, my HD414s are the original ones that made Dr Sennheiser's name. The plastic headband and earphone mounts are pale grey, and the original earpads were blue. The HD414s were superceded by the HD414Xs, which had black plastic parts, and yellow earpads. I am now using the yellow earpads as I've used up my supply of blue ones, but the sound is still the same. I also have a pair of HD214Xs, from about 1975. These are closed back models and were quite a bit dearer at the time, but they have a slight spike in the frequency response in the higher midrange, and as such only get used when there is outside noise which needs to be cut out.
I also use the HD414s in my guitar amplifier when she who must be obeyed starts tutting! Again they reproduce the guitar's sound, and the amp's sound, superbly.
They are wonderful headphones, and if you ever see any for sale, I'd recommend you grab them if you can,
Hi Neil,you play guitar eh,what have you got,and what amp?i,ve got an old W.E.M. superforte 4x15 and a Hi-Watt 200 LB in the loft that hasnt been used for about 25-30 years,i,ve also got my old Fender Precision mounted on the wall,in a glass case with the origininal Rotosound round wound strings,A,D,F,&G,i cant play anymore due to trapped nerves in my back,which cause my hands to sieze up at odd times,but i still look at the Fender from time to time,and wonder what may have happened had things been different,ah well,will keep my eyes out for the headphones......cheers.......Dave
Hi David, thanks for your interest: My first electric guitar, in 1959, was a solid bodied Hofner Colorama (you couldn't buy American instruments in those days), and my first amp was a 10watt Watkins Westminster. These were followed by a 1961 Fender Strat in Fiesta Red and an American 50watt Bird amp with a "spring echo chamber". Then in the mid sixties I had a Burns TR2 with transistorised pickups (the Strat having been sold because I didn't like Fenders with rosewood fretboards - silly me), and a Burns Orbit 60 solid state amp, followed by a Framus 12 stringer, then a Harmony Sovereign Jumbo (both acoustic guitars). Currently I have a old Squier Telecaster and a Line6 SpiderII 30watt modelling amp. I don't play much these days as I had a stroke four years ago, and am having to re-learn everything; it's a slow job I can tell you - ah well, it keeps me off the streets!
I think we all think about what may have been from time to time, but in my younger days only the best of musicians made it, not like now, but don't get me started on that!
Hi Neil,know where youre coming from about to-days music,take away the electronics,the no brainer beat ,and youre left with poo with a capital p, i dont know the Hoffner Colorama,but i do remember Burns,one the guys had one,and i think he used Orange Amplifier, but i wont swear to it,sorry to hear about your stroke,hope youre on the road to full recovery............Take Care Mate.........Dave
