Hi Philip,

What about adding tinted plastic reflective film to the insides of your glazing - similar to offices? (The kind that lets you see out but anyone outside only sees their reflection?)

Admittedly it would make the room gloomy but.....problem solved....?

(My other thought was a dense black rollerblind that could be operated faster than curtains? You can buy kits and make these things up quite cheaply DIY fashion...)

 Kind regards, Bill.

Sorry...I should have explained - buying another telly may not solve this problem as CRTs naturally produce more light with less risk of screen burn than plasma.

Kind regards, Bill.

Hello Philip,try wearing polarised sun-glasses...........Dave

Dave... lateral thinking...I like it !!!!....

Strangely enough, I remember someone creating a self contained public toilet cubicle made of glass which used the reflective material (above).

...Fine during the day...the question is..who would use it at night...????

Cheers....Bill.

Hi Bill,at night i,d use whats called a Neutral Density filter, say 0.3 for night time viewing and polarised during the day,i know you can get polarised sunglasses, but aint too sure about Neutral Density[ .N.D ].Still havent got round to getting a phono stage, but mean to go and get one Saturday,a friend of mine is coming with me,who,s a vynil junkie,he,s got the Mitchel Gyrodeck, dont know with what arm or cartridge, but he knows the Rock, though he says that the Gyro is years ahead,i always thought it was up to the individual to determine whats good and whats better, and if the Gyro is "years ahead "so what! i liked the sound of the Rock, otherwise i wouldnt have bought it, i,ve never been into this " mine is better than yours crap "my thoughts are, if it sounds good,go for it,i do fancy a valve job though, they look pretty cool when the lights are low.........Take Care Mate.....Dave

Hi Dave,

You are correct to say the age of a T/T design is irrelevant. A classic is a classic.

The Gyrodeck is/was quite a popular choice and many describe it as neutral. The Rock was the turntable chosen in '92 to illustrate the strengths of vinyl so I'd say that makes it a decent reference deck .

When the LP12 was at it's peak it was always preferred to the likes of the Gyro. Both have their unique qualities and strengths.  When you get to this standard of machinery there are not really any "bad" turntables at all, just different approaches.

The strength of a good design is if it's still here 20 or 30 years later, not a sign of weakness !

Watch out for the hidden penalties with Tubes though...they eat electricity, even when quiescent, and need replacing every 3000 hrs or so...

All the best mate,

Bill.

Hi Bill, the guy who said he didnt have my valve phono stage, and that he wouldnt entertain one has suddenly "found "it,and the guy who built it from a kit says its still ok,but needs to be left switched on for a couple of days before use,so it looks like i,ve saved myself a few hundred quid, maybe even a grand.I had placed an ad in one of the local papers, for a good copy of Tonto,s Expanding Headband,Zero Time ,and i had a reply last night, the woman wants £10 for it,lets hope its in mint condition.I was speaking to Bernard[the guy who built the phono stage ] last night about the various designs of turntables, and right away he mentioned Pink Triangle, i personally have never seen one,and after his description of it i dont think i want to,it sounds like a childs toy,but at over £1000 i dont think so,still i,m happy with the Rock and he,s happy with his Gyro, like i said its each to their own,if my T/T is still here in 30 years i,ll let you know, hope i,m still here in 30 years, but you,re right,a classics a classic no matter what its age,one of my cameras is 60 years old and still going strong, its a Yashicaflex medium format twin lense reflex, and when new cost ten shillings and threepence, i still have the reciept,[ it was in the box when i bought it ]i wonder what turntables were used 60 years ago, come to think of it i wonder what kind of hi-fi was used in that period, think i may delve into hi-fi,s past.............Take Care Bill............Dave

Hi Dave,

Funny you should mention Motorhead in the music thread as that's exactly what I was thinking when listening to my Friday session with Killing Joke ("Lemmy, not the world's greatest heavy metal vocalist,  could make this sound more tuneful and emotive"!)

Seriously though, it seems I may have misjudged them...

Great to hear that you may be finally getting your hands on Tonto's Expanding Headband "Zero Time" at last. We'd appreciate the Review when you get the system up and running!

The Pink Triangle was something of a cult T/T among some members of the audio community. It was dogged by unreliability I understand? The trademark acrylic platter has become something of a standard for many new turntable manufacturers - although the better ones are usually several inches thick for rigidity/resonance reasons.  Better still are the multilayer acrylic/aluminium sandwich type!

Finally, it'll be a cold day in Hell mate when I pay £860 for a football ticket ! .....(I believe they are now changing hands for £7K !!!!)

Kind regards, Bill.

Hi Bill, afraid the album wasnt in good condition at all,in fact it looked like somone had used it as a dinner tray,so i didnt get it,i have been told that there,s a site where you can get rare records such as this but as yet havent found it,the turntable is up and running on my main system, and sounds bloody fantastic, far, far superior to C.D [sorry John Fisher but thats the way it is ] i,ve been told about a cartridge called an Ongacu ,that would fit my criterior, but i cant find any info on it at all,and Brady,s have never heard of a Ongacu cartridge but have heard of an amplifier with that name or somthing similar, and that it was valves and cost thousands,do ortofon still manufacture cart,s similar to the Quasar,i,m going to have to look into this more. The football tickets are bloody ridiculous at £7K,why are true fans being penalised in this way,why if the gate is say 80,000 people, they dont give the fans 40.000 each instead of giving the majority of tickets to money grabbing arseholes, dont these people have enough money, without ripping true fans off, personally i,d shoot the f.....ing lot of them, and i,m not a football fan........going to go before i get another rant...........Take Care Bill.......Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the support mate.

It's worse than that........we can't even get the SFA to postpone a single match to generate a little bit of breathing space for the UEFA Cup Final while the Russians have been allowed to cancel all other engagements !

It's a worry as they are talking about the team having to play as many as 4 games in 8 days at some point. Doesn't augur well for a good outcome...

Could be this one you referred to, Dave...

Hi Bill, thanks for the info on Audio Note, afraid its not the one,as they dont do cartridges, and i didnt know that you could have a cart refurbished, well Bernard says you can, going to look into it. On the football front, this country will give everybody BUT their own a fair chance and F... the people of this country,i,tell you i,m getting pretty well pissed off with this, think i,d better go before i get barred from this site.............Dave

Hi Dave,

Sometimes we forget it's only a game....

It's at moments like that I find myself singing that amusing song "Don't Worry - Be Happy"

Best regards, Bill.
